The Great Gatsby Essay, Research Paper
Expository Paragraph
Characterization
Point to be proved:
Jay Gatsby is a very determined individual. He is very determined to get Daisy Buchanan back into his life.
Evidence:
Gatsby buys a mansion right across the lake from the Buchanan’s place.
Gatsby flaunts his wealth by having huge parties for the sole reason that he thinks it likely Daisy will show up.
Gatsby befriends Nick only so he can get closer to Daisy.
The Great Gatsby’s (1925) main character, Jay Gatsby shows that he is a resolute and determined character who wants only the love of Daisy Buchanan, and will do anything necessary to achieve his goal. The first step of his plan to regain the fondness of the woman he is infatuated with is to buy a colossal mansion just across the bay from her. Gatsby then has spectacular parties there at his mansion, habitually, in the hopes that one day Daisy will wander into one of them some night, although she never does. After many failed parties Gatsby has another inspiration. It seems that Nick Carraway, Gatsby’s next door neighbor, is Daisy’s cousin. After befriending (and half attempting to bribe) Nick, Gatsby talks him into inviting Daisy and himself over for tea one day. After Nick concedes to the idea Gatsby does his very best to make the day as immaculate as he possibly can by sending over flowers, helping to choose the appropriate tea cakes, and by having Nick’s grass trimmed. This is all done to appeal to Daisy Buchanan, the woman Gatsby wants more than anything to dazzle.
