Procedure For Initial Software Setup Of Aix Workstations Essay, Research Paper
Procedure for Initial Software Setup of AIX WorkstationsThe process that we will be performing is pretty “cut and dry”, although it is also a very important and does take some time. This is a process that we use at Caterpillar Inc. for every workstation that is distributed to an employee. Before you start the software installation you must first obtain these items: RS/6000 CPU unit, monitor, keyboard, and RS/6000 components box. Now arrange those items on the work room table. Place the CPU on the floor under the monitor. Out of the components box make sure you have the following: black power cord (CPU), gray power cord (monitor), gray monitor cable, and mouse. Once all the items are accounted for plug the gray power cord and monitor cable into the back of the monitor. Drape the mouse chord and keyboard chord down the backside of the table. Plug the black power chord into the back of the CPU. Plug the monitor cable into the back of the CPU next to the picture of a monitor. Plug the mouse and keyboard chords into the back of CPU next to their pictures. Now you are ready to plug the power chords for the monitor and CPU into the electrical socket. After the workstation has been properly assembled you are ready for the initial software setup. Before you start the initial software setup be sure you have the following items: AIX operating system CD Version 4.1.5, AIX for clients multimedia services for AIX CD-ROM (850 disk 2), Software Development Solutions for AIX Version 2.1, and an AIXBUILD 3.5″ floppy disk. After you have obtained those items turn the power on to the CPU and monitor. As the machine is booting up eject the CD disk drive and place the AIX 4.1.5 for clients volume 1 of 2 CD-ROM into the drive. Once the machine is done booting up then turn the power off and then back on again (we will be booting the machine off of the CD drive). After the machine starts to come up hit the F5 key several times before the icons on the initial screen are all loaded (this is the command to Boot off of the CD drive). After a few minutes of being patient the screen should have a list of instructions on it. Hit the F1 key and enter to use the VGA display as the system console. The CD will begin loading and will take you to a prompt that says choice [1] for English install, which is what you want so simply hit ‘1′. Then you will be brought to a screen asking what kind of installation you would like, and you will choose ‘1′ again for a “New and Complete Overwrite”. Next choose ‘0′ to go back to the main menu. If “hdisk1″and “hdisk0″ are both selected then deselect “hdisk1″ so the “root volume group” is only displayed on the first hard disk. Now choose ‘0′ to begin the install. This is when the CD will begin to load the AIX Operating System onto the hard disk. This will usually take around thirty minutes and the screen will be rapidly scrolling through the information that is being loaded onto the workstation.Once that is complete there will be an options menu on the screen. The first option is to set the time. Select this and change the time to the current time making sure that the time zone is set to your correct time zone. Next select “set Root Password” and enter a password of your choice, but be sure to remember it. Then select to complete tasks and exit to AIX login. Login as “root” at the prompt you are brought to and enter the correct password that you set in the previous step. Now place the AIXBUILD floppy disk into the floppy disk drive. Once the disk is in type “tar xvf /dev/fd0″ at the # prompt (fd0 is the floppy disk drive). That will tell the system to read the disk and load the AIXBUILD files, which does not take long at all. After it is done reading the floppy disk then type “tmp/rm_welcome.sh” at the # prompt. That will remove the default IBM welcome program that is set to run every time you power on the workstation. Next type “tmp/P*” at the # prompt. This command will run a “powerbuild” program from the “tmp” directory. The system will now prompt you to put the AIX 4.1.5 volume 1 of 2 disk in and then enter ‘y’ (this disk should still be in the CD drive so just type ‘y’ and enter). After some time, about twenty minutes, the system will prompt that it needs AIX version 4 disc 2 of 2. Put this disc in the CD drive and enter ‘y’. After awhile the system will prompt that it needs the Software Development CD 1 of 2. Put that CD in the drive and enter ‘y’ to tell the system the CD is loaded. That CD only takes a few minutes to load and then your almost done. Although, the system will ask you whether or not you would like to finish the set-up or not just choose “No, I would not like to finish the set-up at this time”. If you were to choose yes, you would be asked to enter such information as the workstations: “nodename”, “IP” address, “Environment”, and “Userid”. In order to reboot the workstation type “shutdown -r” at the # prompt. Now simply wait for the workstation to come up and your done.
