Commentary on Romeo and Juliet
Lines 25-45
In the play Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare uses many different writing techniques to make his work entertaining as well as engaging. In lines 25-45 of Act II, Scene II, he uses extremely skillful writing to show how each of them feels while in the state of love. These lines are part of the famed “balcony scene” where both lovers confess their love to each other. Romeo has fallen in love with Juliet at first sight, and apparently so did she. At this point they love each other for their beauty, they are still yet to talkRomeo has returned to talk to his beloved Juliet. He hasn’t even talked to Juliet; he has fallen in love with her beauty consonant to other men. Juliet confesses her love to Romeo unaware that he is listening, this pleases Romeo. This is very important because it is the beginning of the plot; they declare their love to one another.
Shakespeare using a lot of figurative language to reveal as well as clarify Romeo’s love towards Juliet. He uses many metaphors comparing Juliet to a winged messenger, as well as a bright angel. ” O, speak again, bright angel, for thou art
As glorious to this night, being o’er my head as is a winged messenger of heaven?sails upon the bosom of the air.” He compares her always to a person, or object, which holds an upright connotation. Romeo is comparing Juliet to a messenger in heaven showing how highly he thinks of her. Shakespeare uses metaphors, as it is often used to express one’s feelings. Juliet on the other hand is questioning herself about why Romeo has to be a Montague, and what it means. Shakespeare portrays her with an irritated attitude and tone. Here not only is Juliet’s attitude irritated, but the author as well has a tone.
There is a theme in these lines; Rome is falling in love with Juliet and her beauty. This theme is carried throughout the entire story. Even at the sorrowful end, when Romeo is mourning Juliet’s “Death”. He thinks she is dead yet he still speaks of her beauty that he will miss the most. Words are very powerful, more so then beauty. Beauty is temporary while words can last forever. The choice of words is also very important. Romeo was very passionate?she was very vulnerable; he was experienced?she was naive. It’s all about words, Shakespearean words.
