Vietnam Essay, Research Paper
Harold “Light Bulb” Bryant’s portrayals of life in the Vietnam War offend the human race. Not so much the actions Bryant displayed, but the demeanor of the U.S. armed forces. Through Bryant’s stories one comes to the conclusion that war made these people completely mad, and lost every bit of morality. Perhaps a standard response to this article would involve focusing on African American soldiers in Vietnam, but the sins of our predecessors cannot be ignored.
The U.S. government drafted young men left and right to fight a war with a false cause. So in order to keep their soldiers happy they provided cheep prostitutes and alcohol to the men on their days off. Lets not forget the U.S. army’s policy of looking the other way when it came to the rampant use of marijuana, The United States government swallowed their morality and laws to keep these men fighting for a war locking a legitimate cause. The most disturbing of Bryant’s stories involve the death of two women and one male Vietcong. A soldier proceeded to have sexual intercourse with a woman he killed to get his, “Rocks Off!” That is raping someone’s soul and degrading all respect a man may have had.
Vietnam is one of the twentieth century’s greatest tragedies. Yes, compared to World War 2 the casualties were minimal but the U.S. had no business interfering with this war. Almost everyone I know has an uncle or grandfather with tragic memories of this war. Vietnam not only killed many innocent people, but also deteriorated the United States morality!
