No Where To Be Found Essay, Research Paper
The two stories The Minister and the Black Veil and Young Goodman Brown have a lot of comparison and contrast. Both of Hawthorne?s literary works relate towards sins, evil, and also puritans. With both of these stories Hawthorne relates the two main characters in different ways and also shows symbolism.
Both of these stories have one main character. In Young Goodman Brown the main character is Young Goodman Brown. In The Minister and the Black Veil the main character is Mr. Hooper. Young Goodman and Mr. Hooper share a common symbol in both of the stories. Hawthorne uses certain symbols such as darkness, gloomy scenes and towns. For instance, with the dark scenes which means death is near. Another symbol is graveyards, which mean something bad is about to occur.
In both of these stories hell is another that Hawthorne uses in both of his stories. Hell represents sin, evil, fire and anything that is considered bad. In ?Young Goodman Brown? hell is something that Young Brown never considered, but as the story continues, Young Goodman starts to realize and take in some of the things about hell and sin. Mr. Hooper on the other hand had a hidden sin, which was hell inside of him.
With Mr. Hooper his smile signified hope and salvation as with Young Goodman his wife Faith signified hope. The veil with Mr. Hooper symbolizes secrets that he has been keeping from people. And in Young Goodman?s dream Faith was a secret to him, because Young Goodman thought that Faith was this wonderful, pure, church going woman by day, but as the dreamed continued Young Goodman found out that she was a witch by night.
Both characters show comparison by being with the church. Young Goodman a church going man and Mr. Hooper a preacher. Mr. Hooper?s contrast towards Young Goodman was that he had a hidden sin, which the black veil that Mr. Hooper wore kept it covered. With Young Goodman he had no hidden sins but he did have the thought of sins after he had his dream.
In conclusion The Minister and the Black Veil and Young Goodman Brown both share similarities towards dealing with the devil and sins. Symbolism also has a big effect in both of these stories. Hawthorne expressed his views in these stories of human life by using spiritual gestures.
