Sports And Buissness Essay, Research Paper
Patterns are a very important part of any novel. It takes a delicate skill of the
writers to manipulate these patterns so that they do what is intended. If the writer has
control of his word choice and clearly reveals these patterns to the reader, it makes the
book stronger and understandable. The use of patterns is to convey an underlying
meaning. If these patterns are not revealed strongly to the reader, the book may seem
confusing and the message or plot of the story may be misunderstood. In ?Cival Peace?
and in ?And of Clay We Are Created? the authors show masterfully how control of
patterns can allow the reader to get inside the character?s head and see exactly who they
are and where the story is leading them.
In ?And of Clay We Are Created? the main pattern is transformation. It occors
often throughout the story. It gives the reader a clear understanding of what is happening
to the character. The biggest transformation in the story is Rolf Carle` becoming
Azucena.
?He understood then that all his exploits as a reporter, the feats that had won him
such recognition and fame, were merely an attempt to keep his most ancient fears at bay,
a stratagem for taking refuge behind a lens to test whether reality was more tolerable
from that perspective. He took excessive risks as an excercise of courage, training by day
to conquer the monsters that tormented him by night. But he had come face to face with
the moment of truth; he could not continue to escape the past. He was Azucena.?
This quote shows us the ezact transformation from Rolfe Carle` to Azucena. This
is powerful because it makes a clear and distinct comparrison between the two main
characters. This is what the story is entirely based on. This allows the reader to see why
they cared so much about each other even though they only new each other a short time.
Rolfe saw himself like her, he felt as though he was stuck in the mud and water not able
to breathe or move. The author masterfully uses pattern to make the reader concious of
what the character is feeling and it gives us something tangible to relate. By the
describing of what Azucena was going through and then Rolfe being compared to that
we can see the feeling and relationship between the two characters. The authors also uses
transformations to evoke compassion from the reader.
Rolfe Carle` removed the life buoy, closed her eyelids, held her to his chest for a
few moments, and then let her go. She sank slowly, a flower in the mud.?
This evokes great emotion from the reader. We are reminded that she was an
innocent girl caught in an avalanche. She did not expierence life, she was a young,
innocent, sweet flower. The patterns of transformations in ?And of Clay We Are
Created? is what takes the reader through the story. It links all the character information
we received in the begining to feeling and substance. We understand the feelings of Rolfe
Carte` and why he cares so much for Azucena. We see how they connect and how
innocent and beautiful she was. This pattern helped us compare and evoked feeling,
sometimes patterns convey the underlying meaning of a story.
In ?Civil Peace? the simple pattern of repeating words show us, the reader the
underlying meaning of the story and what the character was thinking. Johnathan Iwegbu
thought he was lucky because he had only lost one son in the war. Instead of mourning
his son?s death he celebrated the fact that three sons lived. He was happy that he still had
his bike and his house. The war made him less compassionate toward life and his family.
In the story the lack of emotion strikes the reader as different. Why would Jonathan feel
so lucky and blessed after this terrible war in which he lost a son. ?Nothing puzzles
God.? This line repeated over and over again tells the reason. He believes that everything
happens for a reason and that God knows what will happen and how it will efect people.
If this line was only used once or twice the reader may not pay much attention to it. The
author knew that this line was the meaning of the story and and told us why Jonathan
acted and thought as he did.
?`I count it as nothing,? he told his sympathizers, his eyes on the rope he was
tying. `What is egg-rasher? Did I depend on it last week? Or is it greater than other things
that went with the war? I say, let egg-rasher perish in the flames! Let it go where
everything else has gone. Nothing puzzles God.??
The pattern of repeating thosae words throughout the story shows us, the reader
what is happening. The author made clear his meaning in this story with those words.
Johnathan felt that God controlled everything and he put his faith in God because he
thnks God knows everything. This pattern like the other was very effective in
communicating the story with the reader
Both patterns were very different in the way they are presented but both
accomplish what they were intended to. In ?And of Clay We Are Created? the author
uses transformation to connect the characters. The pattern in this story are dealing
specifically with the characters and nothing else. It gives the reader a clear picture and
evokes emotions from them. In ?Civil Peace? the pattern is just the repition of words. It
does not deal with the characters directly but indirectly. It shows the thoughts of the main
character, Johnathan. It also reaveals the underlying meaning of the story, that God
knows all and knows what is happening. Both of these patterns are used well and both
contribute to the story but they both do it in different ways. They differ in structure and
the kind of patterns they are. They also differ in what they want to get out of the reader.
Both are patterns but differ in every other way.
