Grade 4 Solar System

I. Pre- Instruction Phase

1. NYS Standards:

ELA Standards 1,2 & 4- Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking for

-information and understanding

MST Standard 6- Understand the relationships and common themes that connect mathematics, science, and technology and apply the themes to these and other areas of learning

Social Studies 3- Use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their understanding of geography of the interdependent world in which we live- local, national, and global- including the distribution of people , places, and enbrioments all over the Earth?s surface

2. Objectives

Cognitive:

Affective/ Social: Students will gain an appreciation of each other through cooperative learning process and demonstrate ability to respect, listen, and work together towards a common goal

Psychomor: LWDAT form groups and use materials in a proper matter

3. Content Vocabulary

5. Student Modifications

Students will be placed in cooperative learning groups of four by the teacher, the groups will include a mix of gender and abilities.

?Know it all kid? will be assigned the role of recorder sot that he/she can focus

II. Interactive Phase

6a. Set/ Focusing Event: I would like everyone to close their eyes and think about the night sky. Do you ever wish you could go beyond our atmosphere, maybe visit another planet?

Bridge: Since we just spent time learning about Earth and our Moon now we are going to spend some time learning facts about other planets.

? I will direct the students to get into their cooperative learning groups, they have been previously assigned a group.

? They will be given about a minute to re-establish their role in the group, as either facilitator, reporter, clarifier, or timekeeper (groups with extra members will be assigned a role as well). These roles will be listed on an overhead for their reference, meanwhile teacher should be handing out materials and rubrics. Ask the students for thumbs up when they are all set and ready to begin.

? After the students hear the signal (chime) to be quiet they will again be asked to look at the over heard where the social skills for a positive experience will be listed as a reminder.

6b. Implementation: As you all know we live on planet Earth. A planet is a large object in space that revolves around the sun. Including Earth, there are nine planets in our solar system. The solar system includes the Sun, the planets and their moons. As you see each group has been assigned a certain part of our solar system to work on.
