The iconoclasm debate wasn’t very serious at first. However it eventually lead to many

problems. It lead to many riots and separated grouops of people and effected the churches.

The icons were soppossed to be used to help people to worship God and remind them of God.

However some people used it for something other than it was intended to be used.

The icons were soppossed to be used to remind people of God and were used to help

them worship God. They were pictures of saints on small pieces of wood. Many people had

them. They had them when they prayed and worshiped. There were also icons in many

churches.

However people could easily use it to worship the item itself and not to God. People

could have used the icon to worship the icon itself or use it to worship a different religion. For

example an icon with a saint could be used to worship some god from another religion, or they

could be used as idols and the icons itself could be worshiped. For that reason the Byzantine

emperor decided to bann icons from churches and use in Byzantine.

People began to have riots over them. They rioted about the icons because they weren’t

allowed to use them and they were taken out of churches. There many wars about the

iconoclasm between the east and the west. The western part of europe sopported the icons

while the eastern were against it. Many icon makers moved out of the region and moved to

eastern regions such as Italy, where icons were accepted.

There were many reasons for icons to not be used because icons would be used for

other things that were against Christianity. There were also many deaths in the iconoclasm

controversy because of wars between the east and west that were for the icons and against it.

The iconoclasm debate lasted until one of the emperors in Byzantine let icons once again be

used for the original purpose it was made for, to help someone worship God.
