Women in Management

Women are often most sensitive to changes in the environment because they are in closest contact with the home and the land; they are the first line of defense. Women represent a huge consumer market: They control over 80% of consumer spending in the United States. Importantly, beginning in 1999, the majority of Internet users will be women. Some providers even mention 40% of all users to be women. Are we seen differently form companies – as consumers and as employees? Will we make use of this market power to set new goals? Women are entrepreneurs. Women begin most of the new businesses. This provides a great opportunity for all sorts of companies from financial services to technology. Between 1987 and 1996, the number of women-owned businesses increased by 78%, almost twice the rate of increase of all U.S. firms, from 4.48 million in 1987 to 7.95 million in 1996. Time is a critical element. There are a huge number of demands placed upon them: kids, husbands, elderly parents, the home, the groceries. One huge problem faced by all women whether they work or not is TIME. Brand- loyalty is just one strategy that women implement to save time.

Receiving a promotion is an event to be celebrated. Employees promoted to the role of manager are confronted with a new set of responsibilities and yet, too often, these employees lack management training and development skills. Consequently, new supervisors are faced with a difficult rite of passage – learning through trial and error. “To ensure the smooth transition from employee to manager, the virtue of continuous learning must be integrated into the corporate culture of any organization,” says Andrew Schwartz, president of A.E. Schwartz & Associates, Watertown, Mass., a comprehensive management and professional development organization. The following questionnaire aims at the heart of management development:

+ Can you identify your leadership style?

+ Are you communicating clearly with your employees?

+ Do you set achievable goals?

+ Are you in charge of a motivated workplace?

+ Do you find yourself overwhelmed by insurmountable projects, endless paperwork and constant interruptions?

+ Are you familiar with the problem-solving process and your own decision-making style?

Once you are able to answer these questions you will be able to understand how all the small details of a business work together to make a whole.

Leadership is the ability to bring people to work together efficiently to achieve a goal. Transformational leadership is the most popular leadership a manager uses. Transformational leaders are able to articulate a clear, powerful, transformational agenda which answers the question, “Where, exactly, are you leading us over the next five to ten years?” They are able to tell us what is the current reality they are concerned about or interested in, and they are able to outline the outcomes of our work with them should we decide to follow them or join them. Leaders are people who take responsibility for change agendas; transformational leaders take responsibility for very large change agendas, so we hear their agendas for societal transformation with skepticism because they are so ambitious, difficult and uncommon. But we are also excited, inspired and energized because these agendas draw us back to the center of our humanness, our deepest moral and ethical concerns. Transformational leaders realize that there must be a critical mass of leaders moving any societal transformation, whether in organizations or in larger domains, so they identify other leaders and potential leaders whose change agendas overlap with theirs and skillfully nurture the growth and development of those leaders. They look for leadership among people already given formal leadership responsibilities and also among people who have not been given formal institutional leadership roles. Transformational leaders want leadership at all levels, so they find ways to invite leadership at the line level and at the volunteer level.

To be a successful manager you must have these skills to be able to get the job done right.

You must have excellent oral communication skills. Communication is the essence of social interaction. It influences what others think about you and how well they understand you. It also determines to a large degree your self-esteem, assertiveness, and social adjustment. Poor communication skills are at the core of many frustrating relationship problems, be it in interactions with friends, marriage-partner, co-workers, children or authority figures. Promote your business and yourself by improving your presentation and public speaking skills. Your business will grow and your confidence will soar when you can persuade people to respond to your ideas, processes, products or services. Logical, compelling content is the basis for all successful business communications, written or spoken. Whether you are writing or speaking analyze the audience, establish criteria, create a logic tree, and develop the beginning. Communications has developed skills evaluation processes that allow us to determine where your team’s strengths and weaknesses lie. This process will provide you a clear representation of your sales teams competency levels.

Learn to use a computer or improve your current technology skills and gain a competitive edge in today’s global economy. This objective will help you to provide basic knowledge of handling office tasks on computers. Participants will get to grips with the terminology, gain a practical, working understanding of the subject, and overcome the unfamiliarity. Whatever field you are in, computer skills of any kind are an asset. Specific computer skills can give you an entree into areas quite remote from your major. Generalists with computer experience who do not have a computer science degree fill many interesting jobs. Good computer experience can qualify you for software positions, technical writing opportunities, systems analyst consulting, and jobs in quantitative analysis at Wall Street firms. Computer skills can make a great difference on a resume.

Education and experience are the most important skills that you need to know how to use before going into any type of management. You must read and find all the information about the job before being hired. While waiting for your interview you can learn what you will be doing on the job so the job will be easier for you and your other co-workers.

As for being a manager I would try my very best to do my job right and make sure that my co-workers will work their best to. If we all work together then our company will be strong in sales and bring more customers in.
