Brave New World-Reservation Essay Essay, Research Paper
The Reservation in Brave New World is what is left of the old world because of the Nine Years War. It is what life used to be like before everyone was civilized. The Nine Years War was a global war that brought about the utopian society Brave New World. The citizens of this Brave New World are no longer viviparous, they are now bred in factories like toys. All these citizens are conditioned to be who and what the government wants them to be. The citizens of Brave New World also have no clue what a mother and father are, because they are not taught history. This is why the Reservation is looked
down upon so much.
The Reservation is an example of the extreme side of what are life is like today. All the ideas and beliefs are the same but with a little twist. Children are still born, couples still get married, and people still have feelings. Now in Brave New World s society people are trained to not have feelings, which causes them not to have long term relationships because they don t understand love. Brave New World even considers the words mother and father a curse. They can not understand the ideals, morals and beliefs of
the Reservation. Also, the government does not want the citizens to be like the people of the Reservation because it would cause instability in their utopian society.
The Reservation represents to Brave New World what pornography represents to us today. In our society pornography is a taboo, it is unacceptable to have it or talk about it. That is how the government and citizens feel about the Reservation, it is a taboo to them. The government uses the Reservation as a place of punishment for citizens who go against their thoughts and beliefs. It is a representation of all that is wrong to Brave New World, or actually what would damage the stability of Brave New World.
An example of how entirely different the two society s beliefs are can be seen through two people on the Reservation. These two people, John and Linda, are taken to Brave New World as an experiment to see if they could adapt to utopia. When brought there and shown everything that goes on ,including how people are manufactured and how people actually live their lives, John does not understand why they are doing this. He says the Brave New World is made to easy. His beliefs of love and feelings cannot be expressed because no one understands how or even why he feels that way. Eventually John ends up killing himself because of the difference between him and civilization. He ends up giving into everything, realizes what he has just done, and purifies himself by
hanging himself.
This shows how the Reservation is represented as a taboo to the government and citizens of Brave New World. The people do not understand why John kills himself because they are trained to have no feelings. The Reservation represents socially unaccepted morals and beliefs which could harm Brave New World. So the government must look down upon the Reservation in order to preserve what they have built, and in order to do that they have trained every living creature to look down upon the Reservation as well.
