Please cut and pastIn today?s society interracial relationships are more prevalent than ever before. When we view interracial relationships more closely we are able to create an individual opinion based on our own cultural upbringing. We will look at interracial relationships from a cultural relativists perspective, as well as, an ethno centrist?s point of view. By looking at interracial relationships from these two very different perspectives, we are enabled to effectively exercise critical thinking when addressing this controversial subject.

A cultural relativist tends to look at interracial relationships as truly unique. A relativist can appreciate both cultures separately. Relativists can look at both people as individuals bringing two different cultures together as a union. A relativist views the differences, as well as, the similarities of each individual within the relationship. Cultural relativists would appreciate the distinction between the two cultures in this relationship, and applaud the diversity of this union.

An ethno centrist looks at an interracial relationship as inferior to his/her own beliefs. An ethno centrist is very critical when dealing with other groups. It is difficult for an ethno centrist to produce an objective view in terms of this relationship. It is fair to assume that an ethno centrist is extremely stubborn, and judgmental when it comes to viewing other?s cultural views. Therefore, an ethno centrist would not agree with two different races intermingling.

Looking at the different views from both a relativist and an ethno centrist, we can conclude that a relativist is open-minded, and appreciates cultural differences in relationships. On the other hand, an ethno centrist views interracial relationships as wrong and inferior to his/her own belief system.
