Position Paper(Career Of Equine Therapy) Essay, Research Paper

Position Paper

Hulla hoops , Star Wars, slap braclets, and now beenie babies. During one time or another, they were all popular, and now hold little or no public interest, with the exception of the beenie babies, which can be considered as the current “fad.” Like merchandice, anything can be a fad, as long as it holds a strong public interest for a period of time, and then dropps it as quickly as it was brought up. In the case of careers, and specifically equine sports therapists, fads may be dangerous to invest time in by studing and preparing for. Sports therapists have been working alongside veterinarians for only the last decade or so, and by considering the variety of options in this career, the advantages of this career has over regular veterinary work, and the growing interests in this field of equine health care, predictions are leaning toward that sports therapists will remain as its own profession, not as an extra procedure taught in veterinary schools.

Before looking onto the reasons that sports therapy will survive as it’s own profession and not be combined with other veterinary techniques, the other side of the discussion should be considered. One reason predictions are that sports therapy won’t persevere position and title is that the interest in it is recent. Many people could lose interest as fast as they gained it. An interest in showing and racing of horses must be taken into consideration. If that too loses interest, then there will be less of a demand for these therapists. Fewer horses will be competing if the money isn’t there, and therefore, fewer services will be used. They may also decide that the treatments used by the sports therapists, like massage and acupuncture, aren’t useful to fulfill their desires and move onto another form of recent treatment. Also, the role of an average large animal veterinarian may take over this occupation. New techniques are constantly being introduced at seminars, and after the field of sports therapy is into the equine medical field for a while, it is very possible that it will blend into the variety of treatments used by veterinarians.

Although this career may easily be integrated with veterinary studies, this field offers a range of opinions for applying these skills. It is very convenient to specialize in any one or more of various treatments able to be used. Massage, chiropractic, acupuncture, and other less common therapies, like herbology, are applied frequently by alternative sports therapists, but not used by general veterinarians. Also, another option is to give clinics in addition to treating patients. At clinics, the clinician might treat and help problems at the site, or just teach the group about awareness for conditions and help them to identify and treat certain symptoms. Any of these options will separate the sports therapy from other services, even if veterinarians do include the alternative techniques used by the therapists. Veterinarians too have the choice of specializing and focus into these therapies while holding a veterinary degree. They wouldn’t have to practice, except on using sports therapy, to fulfil their career as an equine therapist.

Using a veterinary degree would help maybe business-wise, to get the business going and claiming, to be a veterinarian in addition. Still, the two careers of veterinary medicine and sports therapy are drastically different in many ways, while still being alike in others. Sports medicine doesn’t consist as much in surgeries, but using holistic treatments to relieve chronic pain. Veternarians tend to use medications and surgical techniques instead. Usually, the alternative therapies used last longer and are safer to use than medications and risky surgeries. This will help considerably in determining whether or not that this field in equine health care will survive to maintain its name and stand out.

Since the last decade or two, many careers have developed, and one considerably large one in the horseman’s interest is the Sports Therapist. Many people are drawing to this convenient choice in health options, especially many owners using top preformance horses who want more out of their well-paid for and well-trained animals. Even if interests cease to incline at such a popular rate, there will still be a demand for this service.

Not only does this new branch of health care provide a better and longer cure for both chronic and acute pain in horses, but it is also holding the horse-world’s interest and showing a path that branches itself into many directions that may be taken. This field shows to be broad enough (depending on which or what combination of the variety of treatments one decides to master) to support itself and become a trustworthy profession.
