The excerpt explains Baker?s childhood growing up in the 1930s. He lived in Belleville, NJ with his younger sister Doris, and his single mother. This story to talks about Russell growing up and how his mother pushed him to work and be responsible as a young adult, but all he wanted to do is listen to ?Dick Tracy meets the Stooge Viller? on the radio reading his book. He started working as a paperboy for the ?Saturday Evening Post?, although he didn?t like the competition in the business so that didn?t work out. Then when Russell was eleven years old he got an A on a composition he wrote over the summer break. He showed it to his mother and sighed and said, ? Russell maybe you should be a writer?, he thought for a moment and it hit him. He put two and two together, he loved stories and it beat selling newspaper, at that moment he knew he wanted to be a writer.
