Shakespeare Movie Reviews Essay, Research Paper

True love, can be a fantasy come true or you worst nightmare in my perspective, for love is a strong word and its used to frequently, but in the three movies I have observed you find yourself truly believing in love and in my opinion, True love is out there, and if your lucky you will meet the right person, the man or woman of your dreams. The three movies I picked are Shakespearean plays, Romeo and Juliet, the modern movie made in 1996, Othello which is also a known classic, tragic love story, where two people truly loved each other and tired to make it work, but had many obstacles to overcome, with family and race.

What is true love? Love means a warm liking or affection for a person, affectionate devotion. Does the way Romeo describe Juliet sound like love to you? In my opinion love does not occur at first sight, it is something that you need to work towards. This Shakespeare play is a classic made into a modern gang bang performance, with knifes not daggers, exceptionally ensemble cars, and different attitudes and clothing.

The cast of Romeo and Juliet, in the recent movie made in 1996, The tale of Romeo & Juliet is about the happenings of two forbidden lovers. Their families The Montagues and The Capulets share an ancient grudge, and now it has broken to a new mutiny. The Capulets only daughter Juliet meets the Montagues only son Romeo at a costume ball held at the Capulet mansion. They experience love at first sight, each falling desperately in love as they see the other through an amazing fishtank. Their love is so strong that they are married the next day, keeping everything secret from their parents. Juliet’s cousin Tybalt is angry at Romeo for being present at the Capulet ball, and he sets out to challenge Romeo to a duel. He meets up with Romeo just after Romeo and Juliet’s marriage and in the effort to get Romeo to fight him(Romeo refuses to fight, Romeo’s best friend Mercutio is killed. Romeo wreaks revenge and in a sudden fit of anger kills Tybalt. He’s banished from Verona walls and before going to hideout in Mantua he spends the night with his love and wife, Juliet.

The following morning Romeo travels to Mantua to wait for things to settle down before he returns to Verona. meanwhile, Juliet’s parents bring her the news that they’ve planned for her to wed Dave Paris The governor’s son, which Juliet will have none of it and enrages her parents with the news she will not marry Paris. Her father is furious and says that no matter what she will marry Paris. Juliet seeks help from Friar Laurence he knows of Romeo & Juliet’s secret marriage, he wed them he comes to her aid and thinks of a plan, Juliet shall drink a special potion which makes her appear dead, then she will be taken to the Capulet tomb so that people and her family think she?s dead. The priest sent a letter by Puraltor, which would be made like that in an old Shakespeare movie or play. Leonardo did not get this letter and presumed that his wife was dead. He goes to see his deceased wife with a bottle of poison he had retrieved from a Apothecary. He kills him self and Juliet awakes not knowing anything, and shoots her self with a gun. The cast

in this well made movie includes the main characters Leonardo DiCaprio played as Romeo, Claire Danes as Juliet, Pete Postlethwaite as Friar Lawrence, John Leguizamo as Tybalt, Miriam Margolyes as Juliet?s Nurse, Pash Mikok as Benvolio, Diane Vernora as Gloria Capulet, and Hardd Perrineau as Mercutio.

Othello was written and directed by Oliver Parker. Othello is a two hour movie, it has used approximately 50% of Shakespeare’s original text from the screen play. Yet, even with so much gone, the movie remains realistic to the play’s themes and conflicts, and the main themes and narrative is surprisingly easy to follow in the movie.

Laurence Fish burn plays the Moor Othello, a gifted general who is to confront a Turkish army at Cyprus. Always by Othello’s side are his two right-hand men: Cassio played by Nathaniel Parker and Iago. Iago is not the faithful retainer Othello believes him to be. Hatred overcomes Iago and he loses his cool, rational exterior, and he planed to cause Othello’s breakdown and shatter the relationship between the Moor and his devoted wife, Desdemona that is played by Irene Jacob. The rest of the cast, 15 total, Cassio was played by Nathaniel Parker, Michael Maloney played Roderigo Nicholas Farrell played Montano, Philip Locke was the 1st, Senator Andre Oumansky played Graziano, Indra Ove played Bianca, Anna Patrick played Emilia, John Savident played the 2nd Senator, Michael Sheen played Lodovico, Pierre Vaneck played Ferzetti Brabatio, and the Duke of Venice was played by Gabriele Ferzetti.

From the play to the movies, Othello’s “tragic flaw” is his jealousy, and it’s this quality that Iago exploits with his complex scheme. It’s an entirely different experience to read the play or see a live performance than it is to view a cinematic rendition, which is a remade film (Shakespearean play). The visual Oliver Parker produces in this film, is especially complex to those who havn?t studied Shakespeare or can follow a movie and comprehend the theme. A lot of people have trouble, who don?t study Shakespeare I find have trouble following the story line.

Iago?s actions do not indeed have motives for his actions, however weak they may be. Despite Iago recognizing that indeed the moor (Othello) is a gullible natured being, he still does despise him. Iago is jealous of Cassio?s appointment as Othello?s lieutenant and this is an ultimate irony in itself as he later mocks Othello for his own jealousy. There is also of course Iago?s blatant racial comments and hatred towards Othello, and his fear regarding the supposed infidelity of his wife. However, Iago using the excuse Cassio had slept with his wife, Othello should had never let his jealousy overcome him. Iago?s attitude to the subject, contrasting with Othello?s view of sex as a unidentified source, is that it is something naturally dirty and revolting, increasing Othello?s paranoia, which makes you start to feel sorry for him later in the movie when he kills his wife because of this paranoia.

Iago?s dirty thoughts and dishonest actions, is his lust for power. Ultimately, his aim is not to become lieutenant, but to go as far as he is able to. You can tell when you watch the movie, for his plotting not only against Cassio, the man who holds his desirable position, but Othello, the general of the Venetian army himself. Iago is surprised by how easy it becomes to manipulate Othello and by the end of the movie, is even a little sorry for the effortlessness at which his plan has come to end.

The setting in the movie also plays a significant role in the explanation for the reasons for the tragedy. The movie is a western civilization and culture in Shakespeare?s time. The movie is outstanding for redoing a Shakespeare play, although all the Shakespeare plays have been done are really clever and use a lot of colour and action. Which is nice to see, for the plays can be uninteresting with no special effects, example blood effect in the movie are very realistic.
