The Movie Bugsy Essay, Research Paper

BUGSY

Benjamin Segal was an infamous mobster during the World War II era, a time when America was experiencing national unity. The world war was in the back of everyone s mind. In the middle of all this madness the daily trials of being American were harder than the easier times of today. Benjamin Seigal was a big part of the mob. He was the mastermind behind the great town of Las Vegas. His borderline genius was shown throughout the movie, as well as his borderline madness. Ben Seigal aka bugsy was confronted by many problems throughout his life both the one that set him back was his love for the ladies, which led to his demise.

Main Characters include

Bugsy-Warren Beatty the main character

Virginia Hall-Annette Benning Bugsy s love interest

Mickey Cohen-Harvey Keitel Bugsy s right hand

Harry Greenberg-Elliot Gould Bugsy s friend from NY

Meyer Lansky-Ben Kingsley Bugsy s boss

Warren Beatty was the main character in this film. Virginia Hill was Bugsy s love interest. These two actors did a wonderful job of acting in a manner congruent with the times of the 40 s. The cast was sprinkled with tremendous talent such as Harvey Keitel, Ben Kingsley, and Elliot Gould. As a whole I think the cast did a magnificent job taking the viewers to an era of America, which is not easily forgotten by those who lived through it. A time when the world was being destroyed by the Nazi Germans was over shadowed by America s self-involvement. A time when Americans were beginning to be proud of their little world power was accented by the world war.

The wardrobe and setting were excellent. The clothes the actor wore were so authentic and representative of the times. I had a conversation with my grandmother and she reminisced with me about the times in which this movie took place. She told me stories of her youthful days. She raised her nine children on Long Island in the state of New York. She witnessed the power of the mafia in the time when the mob ruled. While watching the movie she pointed out several things she had remembered from her youth. There were signs on restaurants and businesses that read, we have air conditioning a sign of the times. Signs that advertised things that are either not available today or completely obsolete filled the background. Air conditioning was in its early stages of development. Today I don t think anyone would patronize a place of business that did not have air conditioning. The cars on the streets were all big bulky machines of the times. Large Fords, Chevys, and Cadillacs filled the streets. The majority were black, the most typical color during the 40 s. Currently you see so many different colors it is hard to concentrate on the road. The clothing of the stars was fancy suits and glamorous dresses in a different style from today s clothing. The language and lack of convenience show how really different this time period was. The manner in which people comprised their social appearance was far from normal by today s standards.

Ben Bugsy Seigal was shown as a crazy man in a crazy man s part of society. Ben existed in the only part of society that he could have successfully survived. His brilliant visions and way of thinking were many times over shadowed by his disillusioned actions. He was the brains behind the city of Las Vegas. Which is one of the greatest cities of our time. Although the brillance of this idea was impeccable, his plan to assassinate Italian Dictator Mussolini conflicted with anyone s accusations of genius. His vision of Las Vegas was, in fact was proven to be one of the best investments that anyone has ever made. In 1991 the six million dollars that was invested yielded one hundred BILLION dollars. On the other hand he bought a home from a famous opera singer and paid twice the value. He wasn t big on money and could care less about material things.

Ben Seigal was portrayed in this movie as the typical mafia family man. He loved his wife but couldn t keep his hands off the ladies. One aspect that I found interesting is the fact that he decides to get a divorce. I have never heard of a gangster going through the process of ending his relationship with his wife. The gangsters usually don t want to give up the loyal ness that their wives showed them throughout the years. He is shown showing his undying love for his children and wife throughout the whole movie. He never once turns his back on his family and supports them, at least financially.

The movie starts by showing Ben Bugsy Siegel s love for his family. He embraces his children as if it was for the last time. Then it jumps right into Bugsy s career, Mobster. The opening scene is one that I hardly forgettable. Bugsy confronts a business associate that has been stealing from the family. His playful antics in this situation are the first sign of his borderline madness. He offers the man that is stealing from him the shirt off his back in a wrapped box as a present. The guy is confused and bewildered by his calm accusations of such a serious manner. In an apathetic jester he comments on his attire and confuses and scares this man even more. After making these suggesting he proceeds to shoot the man several times in the chest. In his relaxed state he then turns and walks out with no fear of persecution. Several people see his face and know who he is but know better than to point the finger at Bugsy.

The next scene shows the advancement in Ben Seigal career. He is asked to head out to Los Angles and take over the operations that are run by an uncontrolled unit of the mob. He was more than willing to accept this job; in fact he was excited. His old friend George, portrayed by Joe Mantegna, was waiting on the horizon to help him take over the city of Los Angles. George is waiting for Ben at the train station. George then leads Ben to his destiny. He introduces Bugsy to the west coast. George is a big actor of the times. Bugsy decides to go to the set and watch his old friend work. You can see his fascination with acting from the beginning. He recites the lines while George acts out a scene. You can see that he would love to be an actor. After this experience he meets the woman that will ultimately cause his demise, Virginia Hill. She was a beautiful woman with a clever wit. She showed little interest in Bugsy and went about her ways. Her actions only inspired Ben to pursue her with a passion. Virginia eventually falls prey to his charm and persistence. Their relationship blossoms into something unexpected by both of them. She convinces Ben to get a divorce from his current wife and marry her. After several attempts Ben s wife finally gets the hint and realizes that he wants a divorce. Her frustrations of not seeing him more than a day or two a year and his history of unfaithfulness seal the fate of their marriage.

He takes over the operations in one swift move. The family on the west coast was never challenged and therefore easily manipulated. Bugsy himself ran the daily operations. He managed to keep the guys under him in control. One time Ben couldn t manage his employees and his woman at the same time. Another attempt to steal from his family was attempted by the old boss of the west coast family. Ben made and example of him and let him live. His demoralizing tongue-lashing and his pride stripping forms of punishment scare this man into eternal faithfulness. He made an example of this guy and future problems seem less likely to appear before him.

His next accomplishment would be his vision of the desert oasis. Ben has a vision while returning from what was a run down shack of a casino. He envisioned a paradise. It was an escape for the average American who longed to gamble and enjoy the sinful delights of the times. The woman that he adored and trusted with all he had betrayed him during the construction of his dream. Virginia Hill embezzled two million dollars for herself. When the word got back to the other bosses, who were already skeptical of this investment, they had a decision to make. The decision was simple. End their losses and pull out whatever they can or finish the deal and attend to the matter at hand at a later time. Although the consensus was to end their losses the loyalty of Ben boss and friend Meyer Lansky, allowed the Flamingo to be finished.

The day had come it was Christmas time. The dream of his desert oasis was finally completed. The devastating opening with no real income causes the bosses to take action against Ben. It was now the time to deal with what they thought was their problem. Ben was asked by Meyer to go back to Los Angeles and meet with his goons. Upon arriving at his Los Angeles home he was promptly disposed of by the hired guns.

Virginia Hill returned the money she had stolen and committed suicide in Austria.

Overall this was a very entertaining movie. It showed me a time in America I didn t get to experience for myself. It also showed me the life of a man whose dreams brought the world the marvelous city of Las Vegas. He could be considered brilliant if it weren t for all his insane ideas and actions.
