The Corruption Of The Church In The Middle Ages Essay, Research Paper

As the population of Europe grew in the 12th century, the
churches that had been built in the Roman style with round, arched
roofs became too small. Some of the grand cathedrals, that were
built as large as possible, collapsed within a century or less of
their construction.
One example I have of this is the Beavais. This
particular cathedral was built between the years of 1247 and 1272.
The cathedral was built to have a higher nave than any of the
other cathedrals of the time. To be exact, it was 157 feet tall.
Then in 1284 the roof fell in. In a second attempt, the pillars
were doubled up everywhere but in the altar. In 1573 the tower
collapsed again and was never rebuilt.
This is not the only cause of corruption of the church in
the middle ages. The cause of many cathedrals’ corruption was
fire. Such cathedrals were Chartres and the Canterbury.
The corruption of the church in the middle ages was a very
depressing time. Many people used these cathedrals to worship,
pray, and get together. Many people spent the majority of their
time in these cathedrals. I guess if you think about it bigger is
not always betters as some may say.
