When professor Caritat arrived in Calcula, he was surprisingly

Greeted by an old friend. Gregory Maximand was described as a trim, tanned, fit man with a perpetual smile on his face. Caritat was invited to stay with his friend Gregory, and was invited to stay for dinner. Professor Caritat agreed to this but first he wanted to see the city. As they started their trip back to Gregory?s house professor noticed that the cars and the buses were very clean. As they drove past some more of the city Caritat noticed that for the most part the entire city was well ordered and neat. All of the buildings were very modern and they were described as being tall and very elegant.

Looking more closely at the city he noticed the people, they were all dressed very neatly. As they walked they would stop now and then, pull out a calculator, punch in a few numbers, and then continue on their way. In addition, Caritat noticed that everyone was smiling, and all the people looked very content in their lives. Every where he looked he saw efficiency, and prosperity, and cleanliness. As the professor continued his visit, he noticed that there were no old or handicapped people on the streets. Caritat asked Gregory where the entire less fortunate people were and where did the lower classes live. Gregory explained that there were no classes and that every person in Utilitara was equal.

The successes of the community in Utiltaria were based on the principal that every one contributes to the community, and those who contribute everything they can live well. Those who do not contribute are considered failures. These people lived in a very well maintained building. The building was surrounded my grass and a pound and playgrounds for the kids. The title on the building read the ?Farewell House,? this was very utilitarian because it pointed to the future giving hope that you were going to live this place soon. The paintings and the color of the rooms gave off a very calming also the furniture throughout all the buildings in Utilitaria were very simple. All this pointed towards a very Utilitarian based society.

After arriving at Gregory?s house, Caritat noticed that again the entire house was very utilitarian, every thing again was simple. The dinner that was served that night was comprised totally of very healthy foods, there was no snacks or sweets. Again a very utilitarian thing, giving the body what it needs and not giving it any extras, that might be bad to the body in the long run.

Throughout Caritat?s visit, he noticed that the old people were put away and treated like ghosts, and the young people are tuned to be perfect people from the beginning of their childhood. Every one carries a calculator, or a computer instead of a newspaper or a cellular telephone. One of the reasons that I think that this is the way they do things is because they want to be as productive as possible. It seems to me that the people that Caritat meet place aside all of their individual ideas for the good of the whole. They also seem to do things that promote the most usefulness to the community.
