Dust is Covering Dreams

Everyone in his life meets a problem of a choice: the choice, which can change ones life. Sometimes people make their choices fast and easy but most often is very hard to make a right decision. In a short story Eveline a reader finds how James Joyce tries to represent an attempt of a poor and na ve Eveline to make a choice of her life.

First of all the reader may ask: how the life of our protagonist looked like? James Joyce shows some grayish, dusted scenery of a little city:

Picture 1: her mother s craziness, scaring voice from the sickroom and, finally, her mother s death.

Picture 2: dust, dust, it covers all the things in her house and in this Great War with the Dust Eveline is a loser.

Picture 3: malefic Miss Gavan, abases Eveline on her work place.

Therefore, it is not surprisingly that Eveline is glad to change the life and to escape from her home place, which is so ignominious for her. A meeting with a nice and fair-spoken young sailor is a great opportunity to do it. This guy seems to be strong and manful, he saw a lot of countries, he had a lot of adventures and he wants to take her to the distant, beautiful city where she will be his wife. It is an unfortunate try! She changes her mind at the last minute. What had pushed her to act so?

Crux of the matter is that her memory played with her a bad joke. Very emphatically Eveline s memory gives her some joyful facts of her biography, pictures of her childhood: little Eveline, playing in the field with others children, a cheerful picnic when her mother was alive and father was kind to his children. Eveline is remembering that in her home she has all necessary things and she is scaring about her future in a distance, unknown country. But the mine recollection is about her promise, which she gave to her mother: to keep her family together. Dust of the memory is covering her dream.

Thus, Eveline has an opportunity to leave the dusted, old house, to change her boring and difficult subsistence, filled with a hard labor and squabbles with her father and to open a new, unknown page of her life, but she does not do it.

Is she right?
