War
Because the causes of war usually involve disputes over land or political and religious differences; the destruction of lives, history and the economy are imminent. Although war is often viewed as a bad thing, it can often be seen as a necessary evil.
The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. That characterizes the oldest cause of war known to man. A ruler must have more territory to expand his kingdom. The only way to accomplish this is to invade his neighbor.
Disputes over the geographical location of borders result in conflict. Throughout history, as culture changes, the previous occupants will not easily release their homeland. This is why some of the bloodiest wars were fought over land. Simply because two groups of people could not peacefully determine where their border lies, they fought each other. Instead of both countries having some land, one country has all the land, and the other has nothing. Ever since the beginning of time, people have disputed every little detail of land.
As cultures change, individuals become discontented with their society. A few rebels will establish an idea that more freedom is possible. This situation could be the result of religious, economic or political differences. An individual with ambition could persuade a small group that a better way of life can exist. Eventually a large group of people can be convinced to rebel, challenge the authority, and seize power.
The effects of war can be both positive and negative. The destruction will be wide-ranging, while the economic impact can have beneficial aspects.
Supplying the battlegrounds and combat personnel makes industry necessary. The soldiers have to be supplied with weapons, food and supplies. Local merchants and other businesses must gear up to increase their supplies. This can put people to work and increase the available money they have to spend.
We all have a visual picture in our minds of the smoking ruins of a city destroyed by war. The great buildings that have stood for hundreds of years are destroyed in a second. Historic artwork and documents disappear and can never be replaced.
The economic stability of a nation is put to the test. Keeping the war effort supplied puts a tremendous strain on the economy. Inflation is possible, along with devaluation of the currency. What used to cost one dollar could possibly cost twenty dollars when the local currency is worthless.
The family structure can disappear during and after a war. Families are separated, sometimes never to be reunited. During the course of a war, communication can be difficult or impossible. Soldiers can be captured and taken to prison camps, be executed or die of illness or malnutrition. Entire groups of citizens can disappear with no one to carry a message to their loved ones.
Because war is an inevitable part of history, the effects must be studied in order to learn if the cost was worth it. One has to consider the aftermath of war. Sometimes we all agree that war is necessary, but let us remember that war is still a bloody conquest.
