Why is he important?

1. He used unusually military qualities in the revolt of

Rio Grande Do Sul against Brazil.

2. He took part in a movement for Italian freedom and

unification known as the Risorgimento, he organized a

military group of over 3000 volunteers and

unsuccessfully fought the Austrians, but in 1849 he led

his volunteers to Rome to support the Roman Republic.

3. In 1859 Garabaldi led his forces to fight against the

Austrians in a successful battle in the Alps.

4. In 1860 Garabaldi took over Sicily and set up a

provisional insular government.

5. On October 26, 1860 Garabaldi took over Naples by

defeating the Neapolitans.
