Thestone Angel (Discuss The Ef Essay, Research Paper
Jason Currie considered Bram Shipley to be such an unsuitable husband for his daughter because Bram was unsuccessful both as a farmer as well as a man in his life. There are many other reasons due to which Mr. Currie considered Bram as unsuitable for Hagar.
Mr. Currie described him as being as common as dirt (p.47) and did not think that he could be described as a successful man. Another Reason Mr. Currie disliked him is that Bram had been married previously.
When Hagar announced her intention of marrying Bram Shipley, Mr Currie s main objection seemed to be that she had no right to make such a decision on her own, and once the marriage had taken place he ignored his daughter. He was thirty-eight when Hagar met him at a dance. He had a farm outside the town on river land, which should have been good but was not.
Bram Shipley scared Hagar by whispering bad remarks about the minister and drank a lot, spending night in the barn when he knew that his drunken presence would be unwelcome in the house. His values where also different than those of Hagar s. Hagar s where founded on the social approval of others. When the farm would be growing wheat successfully Bram would want to switch to breeding saddle horses, because he was crazy about horses . His point of view was typical; Let somebody else cash in I got enough to buy what I want ([p.83).
Hagar married Bram in a spirit of a stubborn pride and independence. She only entered this marriage expecting of changing him into the man of her dreams, and intentionally denied him that love and sharing which might have made him less disloyal and hopeless.
