The Aztec Ruled a mighty empire for more then 1,000 years! For a century the Aztecs of Tenochtitlan had been the greatest power in Mexico. As they grew in political status they became sophisticated and civilized. The Aztecs had a very neat religion that they practiced they worshipped gods and sacrificed people and animals. Some of the most important gods of the Aztecs were Huitzilopochtli the sun and war god, Tlaloc the rain god, and Quetzalcoatl the parton of arts and crafts and the god of self -sacrifice. Human sacrifice played a important role in there ceremonies they had. The Aztec believed that the gods needed human hearts and blood to remain strong . Worshipers sometimes ate portions of a victims body. They may have thought that the dead persons strength and bravery passed to anyone who ate the flesh. Most of the victims were prisoners of war or slaves, but the Aztec also sacrificed children to the god Tlaloc. The Aztec wore skins and feathers both men and women.
