Alienation is mental derangement by. An uncertainty or awkwardness of your surroundings. To the effects of Soldier s Home, the insecurities of how the war and the people back home perceived the events as opposed to the soldier upon their return home. Such as when Krebs, who feels alienated, returns home from the Marines. Coming back to Oklahoma the community finds its rather ridiculous for him to be getting back so late, years after the war was over. Moreover, the town had heard too many atrocity stories for Krebs to be listened to thus, he having to lie talking about the war caused a sense of distaste for everything that had happened to him in the war.

Finally, Krebs parents both feel he is loosing his sense of ambition and he doesn t have a definite aim on life. Krebs, tries to keep his life simple, although the war still perplexes him and he doesn t know how to deal with the experience.

Alienation is the process by which the estrangement of a person or of his affections in this story.

Sammy is the one who is being alienated by the effects of his lust/wanting to impress the three girls. He feels he will impress the girls and shouldn t be treated with disrespect from the customers making him feel degraded, thus leading him to upright and quite. Although this has the opposite effect. The girls, see no interest in Sammy and do not hesitate to walk out of the story without him. Thus, embarrassing himself and in front of his boss. Such as: did you say something, Sammy?

I said I quit.

I thought you did.

You didn t have to embarrass them.

It was they who were embarrassing us.

What happens to Sammy is the fact, he quits his job along with not impressing the girls and looks like a fool.
