Thomas Jefferson 2 Essay, Research Paper
Thomas JeffersonThomas Jefferson, a man whose actions were instrumental in establishing tradition in our country, is one of the finest presidents that the United States of America has ever seen. One’s inaugural speech ultimately has one purpose; this purpose being too elaborate on your plans, and more importantly your goals for the forthcoming presidential term. In his inaugural speech, the late Thomas Jefferson explained his plains and his goals in an eloquent manner that manner that touched all the people of this new nation.Internal taxes were reduced. The military budget was cut drastically to save needed money. The Alien and Sedition Acts were permitted to lapse. Long-term plans were made to extinguish the public debt. Jefferson attempted to avoid a policy of either appeasement or war by the use of economic pressure. The Embargo Act, which prohibited virtually all exports and most imports and was supplemented by enforcing legislation, was designed to coerce British and French recognition of American rights. Although it failed, it did rouse many northerners, who suffered economically, to a state of defiance of national authority. The Federalist party experienced a rebirth of popularity.
The Louisiana Purchase capped his achievements. Ironically, Jefferson had to overcome constitutional scruples in order to take over the vast new territory without authorization by constitutional amendment. In this instance it was his Federalist critics who became the constitutional purists. Nonetheless, the purchase was received with popular enthusiasm. Thomas Jefferson laided down the infrastructure of our modern United States of America, with his liberal views and open mindedness. Simplicity and frugality became the hallmarks of Jefferson’s administration.
