A Tale of Two Novels.
Cry, The Beloved Country by Alan Paton and A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens are two very different books written in two very different periods. Cry, The Belovedplay a crucial role in developing the plot.
Superficially it seems that these two books have absolutely nothing in common however, once carefully analysed, revealed is a very profound similarity, the mutual theme of Justice hierarchy of the nation, the race of the community and the current financial situation of the.
Cry, The Beloved Country is broken up into two different social classes, the upper class white people and the lower class black people. The black people however, also have a and Injustice within human systems, in the context of Country is a novel about a black man s country that is oppressed by the white man s law governing the nation and forcing racial injustice upon the native citizens. A Tale of Two ; and lower ranked ones, who are forced to earn their income from subsistence work on farms. In sinjustice in the novel is the court trial between the two cousins and an accomplice in the murder trial. Absalom Kumalo, Matdifference of justice between the blacks with power and those without. It is obvious that there is injustices between blacks and whites however, this is understandable, because thew Kumalo and Johannes Pafuri are the perpetrators pite of this we see the greatest they were living in a time of apartheid where the white supremacists where forcing the blacks away from their native homeland.
One of the greatest displays of Cities is a novel depicting the relationships between France and London and the intertwined characters that the two books is very comparable.
It is exposed in both novels though a variety of methods; the social standings, the division between themselves where there are higher standing individuals, due to employmfor intent to kill. Finally Absalom resorts to taking the same plea as the others, to save their own. It is also revealed that the court case was biased against the black people showing the harsh reality that they didn t really have a fair chance.
A Tale of Two Cities is a very different book; one of the greatest differences is obviously thethe excuse that they were not at the scene of the crime, when the reality is they were actually there. Absalom uses the excuse that he had no intention to kill however; the court will style of writing. Dickens uses a style appropriate for the time of the piece, which greatly mirrnot guilty nevertheless, this was not what he really wanted to do. It is revealed that Matthew and Johannes take advantage of the naivety of Absalom, they trade his life ors the style of Paton. A Tale of Two Cities is broken up also into two different social classes however; this is also broken up further through the division between the two citiesent in the citywho were involved in the murder, Matthew and Johannes plea not guilty and use not accept this plea, as the trial is for murder and not , Paris and London. There are the upper class aristocrats notably the Marquis and Monseigneurs revealed in Paris and the lower class citizens. As in the first novel, the lower class people also have a division between themselves with higher standing individuals and lower ranked ones. In spite of this we see the greatest difference of justice between the aristocrats with power and those lower class citizens without.
One of the best examples that are displayed in the novel is that of the relationship between one of the Great Marquis and a poor villager who s child has just been run over by the careless aristocrat. We see that the first thing that the Monseigneur cares about is What has gone wrong? Then we see the greatest act of discrimination where the Nobleman realizes that they have run over a boy he asks Why does he [the boy] make that abominable noise? he places the blame on the parents of the boy saying that they should learn to control their children, finally before leaving he offers his condolences by throwing a gold coin at the man. It is this act of cruelty that we see the true injustice agaclass citizens.
The hierarchy of thjue nation is greatly exposed through both novels. It is revealed through Cry, the Beloved Country through the trial where it is perceived that the judge cnot the case, it is revealed through the trial that the judge does not like to let Absalom off easily, instead inst the lower he makes it blatantly obvious to the ry that this man should be pinned for the crimes that he committed. Injustice is revealed ommands respect, even the white people who in the context are generally the upper class however, the judge is seen as a God like figure who decides life or death. Generally it is assumed that a judge will remain impartial and pass a fair judgement for the crimes in true justice. During this novel it is through the judgement of Absalom and the reality that his own blood sold him off to save himself.
A Tale of Two Cities presents the two cities in very different lights. In some respects towards the end of the novel London can be seen as a sort of haven from the deceitfulness of Paris where it is revealed that the injustice is not lost, Injustice is a cruel violamust be ever aware and alert when a seemingly small injustice occurs, before this injustice may become an unforgivable one.even between the characters. When Madame Defarge wanted vengeance for the cruel injustice committed against her family connections, she looked to destroy not only the relative of the culprit, but tion of another individual s rights the examples outlined are by no means exhaustive there are many more that could have been used however, people of the same social system. Higher standing individuals, due to employment in the city and lower ranked ones, who are forced to earn their income from subsistence work on farms, all interact together however, specific differences can be revealed to show the injustice within social systems. It is revealed how John Kumalo Steven Kumalo’s brother who is residing in Johannesburg has got a far greater these tended to be the best examples that fitted into more than one category. It shows that we his whole family.
Cry, The Beloved Country shows how certain financial influences can change the way in which a person acts or even treats income than Steven. He treats Steven differently when they meet and this is very noticeable. It seems almost that John now talks down to his brother because he has money when the reality is his brother is a priest who would have defiantly higher standing authority. This exhibits the theory that money corrupts, and it does.
