Catcher Questions
Q: Can Holden relate to modern day Teens?
A: Yes, I think that Holden can relate to modern day teens in some ways. Holden is living in the fifties at this time, and a lot of stuff has not changed. One specific example of this would be when he went to his sister s school and found foul language written on the wall. I remember when I was in Elementary school and middle school seeing this kind of stuff written all over the walls and the bathrooms. As far as his personality goes I am also sure that he can relate to some other teens. He has a pretty negative attitude and is always talking about people in wrong ways. He might not specifically be saying words but his thoughts in his head tell you. Whenever he sees anyone he immediately starts talking about there bad traits and sometimes he well talk about their good ones but not often. I am sure that modern day teens think this and react this way. Along the same lines Holden likes to be a phony, as he would say, himself sometimes. He well see someone or go out on a date with them and even though he has all these negative remarks and sometimes doesn t even want to be there he will still go there and stay. I believe that a lot of teens in this world do this also.
A: No I don t think that Holden can relate to modern day teens very well. This is because of the time that he lived in and where he lived. He lived in New York in the 1950 s. When he was living here he went to a pretty high class school always had money, and was often kicked out of school. Some of his activities were going to watch opera with girls or going ice-skating with them. Now days many of the teens wouldn t go to opera or ice-skating. Another thing is that a lot of teens that have a lot of money and stuff don t usually go insane they are just spoiled. Or if they do it is usually because of a addiction to something such as drugs or medicine. In this story Holden has no access or at least it never mentions drugs at all. Another thing is that I don t know of many teams that have to live through the death of a brother. He also didn t have as many temptations in the is time period, not as many drugs or guns or anything like that, that could possibly injure him or make him get the way he is right now. In this day I don t know of that many teens that get so depressed and negative just because they want to it usually has something to do with how they were raised or because of something like drugs and alcohol
Q: Is Holden showing any problems with the 50 s
A: Yes I think that Holden is having a problem with the 50 s. He is constantly being depressed and getting angry because of how people are so phony or fake. Well this is what was going on in the 50 s everyone lived in there houses and were friends with everyone. I believe his is what makes Holden so angry and mad is how everyone is so fake and phony. The fifties was just a Leave it to Beaver time when everyone was all nice and secure. Holden is one of those people that like to hear it straight without and curves. He doesn t want people making stuff up just to hit on girls like his collage buddy, or people who act cool even thought they aren t like the guy that meat him and Jane at the movies. I don t really know what time period Holden would fit into though. He is kind of a weird kid who is always negative I am sure if he was in the 90 s he would have a reason that he wouldn t like it either.
A: No I don t think that Holden is showing any problems with the 50 s. People in the fifties were pretty good. They were as Holden would say phony, but I don t believe that would make him have problems with the fifties. He is a living the good life with money, and a house, and a family. This is when there wasn t that many divorcees or hippies. I believe that Holden would have problems with all of this going on. I don t really think that it was the time period that Holden was living in that makes him the way he is. I believe that it has something to do with his mind, it is more psychiatric. I also think that if he was to move to any other time frame that he would have more problems and be in worse trouble then he is right now.
