From Samuel Johnson s perspective, within the circle of the society, because believes and values were acquainted by the public, a change was inconvenient. The society had already established the standards of views. In The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn, because Huck perceived himself as an outcast, those restrictions do not apply to him. Huck s actions were contrast to the society s standpoint. (The society would not approve a white boy helping a black boy gaining freedom.) Huck, liberal minded, resembled the beginning of a new rebellion against the values of the society. He carried out the true definition of freedom, which was the strength of formation of America. These qualities were displayed in Huck s struggle with Miss Watson and his rescue of Jim.

Miss Watson was the guardian of Huck. Huck felt Miss Watson violated his freedom and his life style. He felt she was making the decisions for him to do what, to her, is consider right and what is consider wrong. Miss Watson based her values on religion. She was very restrictive about manner and behavior. Don t put your feet up there, Set up straight, and Don t gap and stretch. Those were the commands Huck received from Miss Watson. When Miss Watson complained about bad places, Huck said he wish he was there. (He was exercising his right to freedom of speech.) However, because what Huck said was being view as inappropriate by the public, he was condemned by Miss Watson s harsh comments. Huck cannot agree with the values Miss Watson possessed. Huck wanted a change; he wanted his freedom; he wanted to do away with religion. So at last I reckoned I wouldn t worry about it anymore, but just let it go (20). Huck did not feel it was important to understand the concept of religion.

Huck produced a well-constructed plot to fake his death. He had gained his freedom. He was free from the society that he so dearly despised. Because his characteristics represented freedom, when Huck learned Jim was sold as a runaway slave, Huck could not renounce the idea of saving Jim. Huck rebelled against society s perception of wickedness (freeing a slave). He introduced a new change that forbids all the inconvenient restrictions of society had put upon him. He had a new view, one that will put himself as an outcast from his comrades. All right, then, I ll go to hell (207). Huck was willing to give up his identity to save Jim. In a simpler view, a whit boy was fighting for the freedom of a black boy. In the simplest view, a human was fighting for the freedom of another human. Huck was fighting what American had fought for: freedom and liberty to all men. Huck carried out the true definition of freedom rather freedom to white men.

A change was inconvenient to the society because the society because the society was blinded by their practiced concepts. Hucks, being an outsider of the society, do not have restrictions to changes. In Huck s change, Huck represented freedom; ironically, the society formed by freedom, suppressed changes.
