Baracks Essay, Research Paper

Some people believe that living in the Marine Corps barracks could be compared to living at a college dorm. I however, absolutely disagree with this idea. I have lived in both and can honestly say that they are very separate lifestyles with few similarities. The daily routine, living conditions, and strictness are especially dissimilar from each other.

The typical daily routine of these two lifestyles could be compared to night and day. As a Marine I start off every morning by making my bed, and ensuring that all the corners are tight 45-degree angles. As a collage student the most I ever done was to pick up my blanket from the floor and fling it back on my bed. After I am done making my bed I always sweep the floor. This would have been impossible in my college dorm due to the fact that we kept our most prized possessions scattered around on the floor. On the way out of my barracks room I always take out the trash, regardless of whether or not it is full. Do not get me wrong; I did take out the trash in my dorm but it was usually after it was overflowing, and we had to climb over it to get out of the room.

The size of my barracks room and a college dorm are about the same. There is one difference though. In college I always had only one roommate. In the barracks they stack us on top of each other like ants in an ant farm. Usually there are three or four people living in a room no bigger than a pop up camper.

The strictness of living in the barracks verses living in a college dorm varies significantly. In my college dorm everything was pretty laid back. We practically did just about anything we wanted to do. The barracks however, is almost like living in prison. There is a guard on duty that makes his rounds every hour just like in the state penitentiary. If the guard on duty tells us to turn our music down, well we listen and turn it down immediately with no questions asked. In the college dorms if I were to ask someone to turn down their music, they would usually reply sarcastically ?Sure buddy;? then they would turn it up louder.

As I said before; there are some similarities. In both the barracks and the dorms there is always someone to talk to. This is good because in both of the situations most of the people are far away from the places they call home. The people that I know in the barracks are not much different from the people that I knew in college. The only significant difference would be that all the people living in the barracks have the same haircuts.

In conclusion, there is little basis for anyone to believe that these two lifestyles are the same. Hopefully I have displayed enough evidence to convince anyone that these two are different.

Even though the barracks and college dorms may look alike from the outside, inside they are very much separate worlds. Comparison contrast
