Frankenstein 2 Essay, Research Paper

Macbeth

Within the heart of this play, there lies the aura of darkness and evil. That combines to create a dominant atmosphere of fear and deception. The imagery of blood, nature and the supernatural contribute to the evil atmosphere. With all three of these key factors this play has an atmosphere of darkness, deception, and horror that surrounds the play.

The aura of darkness is present with the daughters of the devil. The three witches are placed within the play to see that evil rises above good. From the witches mouth, “Fair is foul and foul is fair. Hover through the fog and filthy air” (I. i. 10-11). This establishes the intent of the witches to extend the path of evil. The witches are under false pretense by tricking Macbeth into thinking that they are there to help him and tell him the future. Macbeth seems to be blinded by evil unlike Banquo. As Banquo states here , “But ’tis strange: The instruments of darkness tell us truths, win us with honest trifles, to betray’s in deepest consequence” ( I. iii. 122-126). Banquo knows these witches to be evil, but Macbeth likes what he hears from Satan’s mouth and falls into the hands of evil that very instant.

When the king meets his unworthy death, nature all around changes because of the drastic change in life. For example,” Some say, the earth was feverous and did shake” (II. iii . 60-61). The Earthquake was to symbolize how this terrible act, threw off natural life. At the sound of the owl, the animals knew that something terrible had happened and in fact it was the brutal slaying of their beloved king. Animals all around lost order in life. As the horses did here, “Beauteous and swift, the minions of their race, turned wild in nature, broke their stalls, flung out, contending gainst obedience, as they would make war with mankind” (II. iv . 15-18).As the horses began to eat each other, another unnatural event takes place. The falcon for example, “Even like the deed that’s done. On Tuesday last a falcon, tow’ring in her pride of place, was by a mousing owl hawked at and killed” (II. iv. 11-12). As unnatural as it may seem this happened because of the death of the king. Now evil was present in this kingdom and chaos would reign.

The imagery of blood has a strong feeling in this play. Macbeth says, ” Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood clean from my hand? No; this my hand will rather the multitudinous seas incarnadine. Making the green one red”(II. ii. 59-61). This is the sign of remorse from Macbeth saying that no matter what he does he can not wash this murder away, and that this sin is so severe that it would turn an ocean red. Another use of blood is, “I am in Blood stepped in so far that, should I wade no more, returning were as tedious as go o’er.” ( III. iv. 137-139.) Macbeth knows he has gone to far but he also knows that he can not stop because of, “It will have blood, they say: blood will have blood” (III. iv. 123). He knows the one’s he murdered will soon revenge.

Darkness is the cover of evil and day is the appearance of good. It is shown through this play how blood, nature, and the supernatural, combine to create an atmosphere of darkness, deception and horror. The presence of evil was defeated by the overwhelming presence of good. Night turned to day, evil changed to good and everyone lived happily ever after.
