Show business is communication
Communication is the process of giving information or of making emotions or ideas known to someone. As it has already been said by the previous speakers, in every act of communication there is a source of a message, its receivers and a channel between them. There is also a feedback in every successful act of communication. Show business, sometimes shortened to show biz, is a vernacular term for the business of entertainment. The word applies to all aspects of the entertainment industry from the business side (including managers, agents, producers and distributors) to the creative element (including artists, performers, writers, musicians and technicians). It applies to every aspect of entertainment including cinema, television, radio, theater and music. This presentation deals with the following aspect of the problem: communication between the entertainers and the audience.
Show business is an activity which has, to my mind, mostly a relaxation purpose. It let people forget their daily routine, “shut down” their thinking ability and rest up. I have no doubt about the broadcasted shows. The situation can be different concerning live shows, concerts etc. In the concert hall there is interaction between the performer and the audience, considering the performer to be a worthy one. Thus, there is communication. The performer tries to transmit what he thinks as well as what he feels to the audience, the audience then shows its admiration or something opposite, sometimes even hostility. In such act of communication there is always a leader, who gives the initial impulse to the other which then reacts accordingly. These are artists, for example, who give the first energy impulse and receive a reaction thereafter. Others prefer, perhaps unconsciously, to get energy supply from people sitting (or standing) in front of them and then to give them something in return.
It is often preferable to interact with a show business representative who is worth-watching and worth-listening, but it is nowadays a rare opportunity from my point of view. Unfortunately money is what it is all about. But what do we actually want from “business”? I would be glad if there were something from genuine art in this kind of activity, not just entertainment, but rather a food for thought. The thing that sometimes disappoints me is that now money starts to weigh too much even in what is called “art” replacing creativity and originality.
