Vernon Thaxter is a very confused, yet intelligent man. In the beginning of the story, we become familiar with the character of Vernon due to all the small talk and gossip in Zephyr about the fact that he walks around in his birthday suit, no matter the weather or ocasion.

Most people in Zephyr wouldn’t consider giving Vernon the time of day, partly because he is viewed as spoiled in his wealth, and also because no one wants to be seen conversing with “the naked guy.”

Later in the storyline, Cory is invited to have dinner at Vernon’s house. Tom Mackenson is very uncomfortable with his surroundings and basically, the entire situation. After a short conversation, Vernon, makes it clear that the invitation was strictly for Cory and that Tom was simply a chaperone, so is asked to eat in the Kitchen with Mr. And Mrs. Pritchard.

While Cory and Vernon indulge in junk food, Vernon shows that he still has the “magic” as they talk of common interests. On the subject of writing, the reason in which Cory was invited, Vernon reveals the truth of his childhood, through a story, and begins to have a mental breakdown
