Chemistry Lab Physical Separation Lab
Purpose:
The purpose of this lab was to try different methods to physically separate various
materials. The variables for this lab were the evaporation of the water and/or the loss of sand or salt. My
hypothesis for this lab was that the sand could be filtered out of the water and

Filter paper
Equipment:
Ring stand – used to hold the wire gauze and the evaporating dish
Ring – used to hold the wire gauze in place on the ring stand
Wire gauze – used to set the evaporating dish on to be heated
Butane burner – used to heat the salt water solution to evaporate the water
Evaporating dish – used to evaporate the water from the salt
Balance – used to measure the mass of the solutions
Safety:
Safety procedures included safety glasses and aprons.
Disposal:
Disposal procedures included returning the sand to a disposal jar and dumping
the salt and water down the drain.
Steps:
1. Weighed filter paper and recorded results.
2. Weighed evaporating dish and recorded results.
3. Poured approximately 10 grams of sand on the filter paper and recorded
results of mass.
4. Poured sand into evaporating dish.
5. Weighed another piece of filter paper and recorded results.
6. Poured approximately 10 grams of salt on the filter paper and recorded
results of mass.
7. Mixed sand and salt together.
8. Mixed in a small amount of water.
9. Used filter paper and funnel to separate sand from salt and water.
10. Emptied evaporating dish.
11. Put the separated sand back into the evaporating dish, measured mass, and
recorded results.
11. Repeated steps 1, 2, and 6.
11. Mixed in a small amount of water and find the mass.
11. Boiled the water until it evaporated completely.
11. Re-weighed the salt in the evaporating dish and recorded results.

Observations:
I observed the salt dissolve in the water when the two were mixed. I also
observed how when the mixture was poured through the filter all of the sand remained in the filter paper
while the dissolved salt and water went into the beaker.
Conclusions:
8. Most of the salt was separated from the sand.
8. I added some water to the salt and sand m???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????8. ????????????????????????????? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 8. ? ? ? ? ?
