To What Extent Were Romeo And Juliet Victims Of Circumstance Or Authors Of Their Own Downfall? Essay, Research Paper

In this essay I will discuss who was to blame for Romeo s and Juliet s

downfall or whether it was fate that led to their deaths.

I will first of all talk about how each character contributed to their deaths in this order: Romeo and

Juliet themselves, Lord and Lady Capulet and Montague, Mercutio and Tybalt, the Prince and the Friar.

Then I will talk about how fate contributed and how it was determined to happen.

Romeo and Juliet rushed into marriage too quickly. Juliet was engaged to Paris when they met but this did not stop her because she lived a dreary life and wanted some adventure.

Romeo was in love with Roseline when they first met and immediately forgot about her and fell in love with Juliet:

In sadness cousin, I do love a . Woman.

Then move not while my prayers effect I take,

Thus from my lips by thine sin is urged

One of the biggest mistakes that Romeo made was probably the one where he slained Tybalt because the prince then banished Romeo:

And for that offence those that kill

Romeo and Juliet spent their wedding night together and talk of running away. This is another mistake.

The next morning Romeo flees to Mantua. Juliet is told that she has to marry Paris. But she refuses because she loves Romeo but then she agrees after some thought. So her parents bring the wedding forward one day.

Juliet decides to run away with Romeo and goes to Friar Lawrence. He gives her a sleeping potion to take at bed so that when she is woken in the morning she appears to be dead. Meanwhile Friar sends a letter to Romeo to tell him to meet her in the Tomb of the Capulets:

Hold then dear father.

This is where Romeo and Juliet really start to fall because Romeo doesn t get the message and he thinks she is dead so he goes to the tomb and sees her lying there, what appears to be, dead . He then takes some poison himself and dies. Juliet awakes and finds him dead. She then kills herself with Romeo s dagger.

The nurse didn t help the case at all. She encouraged Juliet and she was also Juliet s messenger. She kept the secret when what she should have done is tell Lord and Lady Capulet or she shouldn t have got involved at all because without her, they wouldn t have been able to marry:

I will tell her sir that you that you do protest, which as I take it is a Gentleman like offer

She was Juliet s messenger and she encouraged her all of the way until her parents ordered her to marry Paris, when she said that it is better off for her to marry Paris:

Faith here it is no use of him

She is telling Juliet that Romeo is gone and will not come back so it would be a good idea to marry Paris because he will be there for her.

One of the main influences for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet was the feuding and rivalry between the two families.

Both Lord and Lady Capulet and Montague had the power to stop the warfare between the two families.

Content thee cheerily my hearts.

Here we see that Lord Capulet had the power to stop the fight from starting at the feast so why didn t he stop the fighting all together. This probably would have refrained Romeo and Juliet from dying. It seems that the only time that the families take the feuding seriously is when Mercutio and Tybalt are dead.

Lord and Lady Capulet didn t really care for Juliet s happiness. If they did they would not have commanded her to marry Paris. They were too materialistic and always focused on money.

Lord and Lady Montague stayed clear from anyone else when they should have stopped the feuding.

Mercutio and Tybalt were the two main feuders and most of the time acted like adolescent teenagers. The fact that Mercutio didn t take the feuding seriously led to his , Romeo s, and Tybalt s death. But if Tybalt had not have challenged Romeo to a duel the fight would not have taken place. But it wasn t their fault, it was the feuding to a certain point. Although the way that they both always had to be the best contributed to the battle.

The other two suspects who could have ended the situation before it got out of hand were the Friar Lawrence and the Prince. The Friar let the whole thing go to far he would have been better to just have refused to marry them in the first place and then none of this would have happened. Even if he didn t do that he should have got the letter Romeo because after all it was his responsibility.

The prince should have banished people a lot earlier and this would have probably stopped the fighting.

I believe that fate played a very little part in the deaths of Romeo and Juliet, if any at all, because everyone had something to do with their deaths. Themselves because they acted to quickly. The nurse because without her nothing would have happened. The Friar because without him nothing would have happened. The Lords and The Ladys because they should have stopped the feuding which led to Romeo s banishment. And the Prince because he should have also stopped the feuding which Mercutio and Tybalt should have taken more seriously.

I feel that Romeo and Juliet were very foolish and what they felt for each other was not love it was lust.
