Ordnance Corps
The symbol of the Ordnance Branch is a gold color metal shell and flame. This symbol was assigned to the Ordnance Branch in 1832. The shell and flame harmonizes with the protection of days gone by.
The branch color is Crimson and yellow. In the beginning, the Ordnance Corps had a red trail, the same as Artillery. Later on in 1851, Crimson was assigned to this branch. Then in 1902 it was changed to black and scarlet. Then finally, in 1921, crimson and yellow were assigned the colors of this branch.
The Act of May 14, 1812, recognized the Ordnance branch. During the Revolutionary War, this branch considered to be under the Board of War and Ordnance. Since this time, many changes have been made to this branch. This branch has grown to what it is today. The Ordnance branch was finally established in 1950.
The description of what this branch maintains and handles is: the progress, production, achievement, and containment of Weapon Systems, Ammunition, Missiles, and Ground Mobility Materiel during Peace and War. The Ordnance Corps is the largest branch in the Army with approximately 135,000 soldiers. Ordnance soldiers are trained in the repair of tanks, any automotive materiel, missiles, and the ammunition of equipment.
The type of units and equipment that the Ordnance Branch uses is up to the Area of Concentration (AOC) within the branch.
There is no set assignment for soldiers of this branch. Soldiers are placed wherever the Army is in need at that time. Every segment has a requirement for Ordnance officers.
The Ordnance Corps orders that officers are initially placed in specialty areas, Areas of Concentration. Depending on the AOC you are assigned different Platoon leaders have different experiences within these AOC?s.
Officers in this AOC are responsible for maintenance of track and wheel vehicles, engineer construction, earth moving equipment, power generation equipment, and the nation’s missile firepower capability.
EOD officers often find their EOD detachment in support of the President or Vice President of the United States, of military and foreign dignitaries at conventions, sporting events, and special national events.
