Levertov uses the imagery of Christ dying on the cross to show that God has indeed taken heed of the request from humanity, by allowing his son to perish for humanity??s sins: “God crucified on the resolve not to displume our unused wings”. The imagery of the “unused wings” would appear to point to humanity??s capacity for greater good not yet realized. Levertov shows God??s recognition of this through his resolve not to take away humanity??s ability for good, before it has a chance to flourish. This line is broken, but not with a period, allowing the reading to flow into the next line, in an unbroken train of thought: “hears: nailed palms / cannot beat off the flames of insistent sound” This line again uses imagery to show God is trapped by humanity??s prayers, unable to stop listening to the constant requests for second chances while by nailing God to the cross, humanity has rendered him powerless, as is thus illustrated in the next line: “strident or plaintive, / nor reach to annul freedom??”
