Sliver Oxide Lab Essay, Research Paper
Sliver Oxide LabPurpose: To find the chemical formula for Silver Oxide and to improve student’s skills with lab equipment. Hazards: Heat/FlameMidly hazordous chemicalsMaterials:Small Crucible and means of suspending it above a flameBunson BurnerAccurate scale in gramsTongsProcedure:Place the crucible on your scale and record it’s weight when empty. Next, place approximately 1.75 grams of silver oxide into the crucible, you do not have to be exactly on 1.75 grams, but being within a tenth of a gram and using an even number will make things easier on you. Light your bunson burner and suspend the crucible with it’s top half off so that the flame is directly under the crucible. Let this sit for approximately fifteen minutes then extinguish the flame and weigh the remaining substance. Record this weight. If you have time, heat the substance again for another five minutes as you did before and record the weight of the remaining substance once again. You should of course have less matter in your crucible after burning than you had when you started, if not you have done something wrong. You can now find the amount of oxygen in your sample by subtracing the original amount of silver oxide from what you now have left in your crucible. You now have the neccessary data to find the empirical formula for silver oxide.
Data: Silver Oxide to start with: 1.80 gramsSilver left after burning: 1.65 gramsOxygen burned off: 0.15 gramsConclusion:There were approximately 4 moles of silver on the compound, and approximately 2 moles of oxygen in the compound. This gives the emperical formula of Ag2O for silver oxide.
