Television Desensitizes

Violence on television has turned onto an epidemic for thousands of families living in

America. Television?s influence on children is unquestionable. Children learn from television that

violence is an acceptable way to deal with anger. Children who watch a lot of television are less

alarmed by violence than those who only watch a little. Children who do not see aggressive

models in real life see thousands of them on television. Children learn violent behavior by

observation, primarily in the home, their communities, the media, particularly television.

When a child is placed in front of the television the child?s concentration cannot be

distracted and their gaze cannot be broken. The child only has eyes for the television screen. The

bright colors, quick movements and sudden flashes capture the child?s attention. When cartoons

are watched, most children find the images presented on the television screen mesmerizing. The

brain activity of a child watching television is about the same as when they?re sleeping. So when

children are in the semi-tranquilized state, they?re often being bombarded with violent images.

Parents can encourage their children to watch programs that demonstrate helping, caring and

cooperation. These types of programs can influence children to become more kind and

considerate.
