When Will We Learn? Essay, Research Paper
The gods must be crazy. Strange pollen is in the air. Like Mr. Dylan said, The times, they are a-changin . What has it been, thirty years since he penned that line? What has changed? America, as a whole has wallowed in the pitfalls of it s own failures and mistakes for so long that we can t seem to break through this bad habit. Sitting here in out artificial pride and patriotism as we go out on the limb of World War Three. We tap dance on the landmines of world dominance. We are not in control anymore. And yet, we think he have this power over all. And it s this grand feeling of strength that fills our weakening hearts every time we look at that flag, that is going to spread it s poison through out us when we least expect it. The times they are a changin . Or at least we thought they were. Or have we just spent our lives covering up every threat, masking every failure, and then proceed with advances with hopes that they will overshadow that horrible truth? The fact of the matter is, we have grown too comfortable. Spontaneity is dead and gone. Or maybe it is just buried alive, and someone or something will dig through the soil and revive the American Dream. Because it has been discarded from our minds. We have lost that motivation, that inner drive, that heart and soul of what made this blistered nation appear to be great. We ve degenerated so far that now the warts are beginning to emerge from underneath the surface. Underneath where the truth lies. And the truth lied underneath because no one ever learns from their mistakes. No one owns up to the responsibility. Which explains this whole conflict in Kosovo. God willing this will be the end of times, the final straw. On the brink of nuclear war. Just wipe the whole fucking world, and cut God a break from having to do it himself. Of course, that is what the book of Revelation is really saying. I don t honestly find the apocalyptic nature of that book very frightening, not after I stop and take one look around me. I don t think that I will be woken from the sounds of sleep by the beckoning blows of trumpets from the sky to see Jesus Christ descend from the clouds. No! He can t descend. There is no place for him to go. Remember, we are dead and gone by our own decisions before God was given that chance to do it for us. Nothing s shocking. I m not surprised by any of this. I can t say I saw it all along, but I knew in the back of my mind that we are not one nation under God, and that the only enemies we truly have are ourselves. Sure, there s Saddam Hussein, and he is definitely an opposition, but we had him, we had the motherfucker no, not we, Bush had him. Bush had the perfect opportunity but he chose another route. The route to reelection in 1992. It s a pitiful picture to paint, but the truth is that the president of the United States gave up on Hussein because he wanted to protect his image. He was only preoccupied with himself and how he could maintain his image in the midst of the mayhem. So he chose not to rid the world of that monster. Yet I am not surprised by his narcissistic self-centeredness. After all, he is a Republican. But you know what? Now, we have to deal with it all over again, only this time, we have to contend with this Goddamn situation in Kosovo too. Hussein sees his chance, his blessed opportunity to inflict whatever the fuck anthrax shit he s got onto everyone. The time is so perfect. Like it was written in the stars, our painful fate is unraveling. No. Not written in the stars, but in Revelation. Not that I proclaim to be anything religious, but bot that I think about it, I believe that if there is a god, he is reigning in his own little heaven watching his people fuck up and destroy themselves.
That is his plan. And why shouldn t it be? The fact they were handed so much to work with only to kill ourselves by our own progressions makes the whole thing even more saddening. It s supposed to make us learn. But when did America ever learn from its mistakes? Maybe if we didn t have Nazi investigators like Kenneth Star, we could have taken a long hard look into the desolation of the future. But no! No, we had to sit through countless accusations and TV reports that boiled down to one central thing. Our president, Mr. William Jefferson Clinton, likes the occasional blowjob. He had and affair. Jesus Christ, this is not the end of the world; this is the beginning of realizing that we have a president who is actually human. I don t want to come across like I am justifying Clinton, but when push comes to shove as every political agenda does, thank God he wasn t impeached. No one wants to see Al Gore in office. Christ, nothing would get done with that dead, subhuman, robotic, tree hugging, environmentalist, PC-enforcing, android, son of a bitch in office. Good luck in the upcoming election though. Christ, Gore is a fucking wind up toy that just makes its way to a wall and then tries to press on, but since there is a wall there, it goes absolutely nowhere. But it keeps moving back and forth as it tries to move onward. Self image. That s all we are. A charade. A Godforsaken charade of lost hopes and dreams. And we are far too comfortable with our flaws. The times they are a changin , eh? Seems like a fucking rut to me. We need something shocking. We need something to bring the American people together again. Maybe that s all we need. Maybe this isn t the end of times after all. Maybe we just need one punch in the face to prove it to us, something that will make us look into each other and from then on truly progress. After all, the elections are coming up the year 2000. Y2K. I believe that something incredibly shocking and deprecating is going to happen to our nation that will open our eyes that have been sewn shut ever since the Reagan-Bush era. After all, it will be the year 2000, the perfect year to keep our seemingly never-ending 20 year curse alive. Nothing like an assassination to bring the nation together.
