Mining In Dysart Woods Essay, Research Paper

I’m attending the Ohio University Russ College of Engineering and Technology. I’ve lived in Athens Ohio for 12 years which is well over half my life and the situation of Dysart Woods has been drawn to my attention because of the lack of action that has been taken to preserve this wild life. I have educated myself on both the Ohio Valley Coal Companies stand point and the Dysart Defenders stand point. I wish for the reader to do the same. Following this paragraph are my conclusions backed up by facts and common logic, and from that I hope to create awareness.

There seems to be an endless struggle between the Ohio Valley Coal Company and the Dysart Defenders. The Ohio Valley Coal Company, who wishes to mine the existing coal from underneath Dysart Woods through a process called “Room-and-pillar” mining. The Ohio Valley Coal company has submitted several requests for permits to mine what was considered a non-protected section. The permits asks to allow room-and- pillar mining, which would be considered less harmful to the environment than other mining methods. This permit is not the first to be asked for. The Ohio Valley Coal Company originally asked for lone-wall mining.
