The photograph of Dorothea Lange?s migrant mother is a picture taken in 1936 during a period of the American depression. The photograph illustrates the hardship, which American families had to endure throughout this era. The photograph portrays a mother sitting down holding her baby and her two daughters standing next to her. The two daughters standing have their heads turned facing the mothers back. They look as if they crying and do not want to see what is happening. The mother looks ahead trying to understand what has happened and what to do next. The family appearance gives the impression that they are poor and their life has been full of hardships.

The mother looks tired and her face projects the impression that she has had a rough life raising her children. The lines around her eyes, mouth and forehead make her look much older than what she actually maybe. Her eyes and eyebrows give the appearance she is squinting. While the lines inside her cheekbones and outside mouth are not simply from squinting, but actually shows how rough her life has been. The mother?s right hand is on her cheekbone looking at what has happened or thinking about something. However, given the reaction of the two girls something just occurred and the mother is trying to understand what has happened.
