Violence has been a significant part of world history and continuously emerges in present day America. This paper examined the social psychological processes that occurred during Hitler?s time, which resulted in one of the world?s worst times, the Holocaust. Through the readings and examples noted, the factors that led up to the violence in Germany was: authority, obedience, conformity through deindividualization, and cognitive dissonance. Hitler was a feared authoritative figure who manipulated the thoughts of his followers by dehumanizing the victims. Once a rationale was established and developed into a norm in the minds of Hitler?s followers, it became difficult to oppose Hitler?s views to destroy the Jews. So what action is necessary to prevent a horrifying event such as the Holocaust from happening in the U.S.? Since the American society view the government with high respect and acknowledge its authoritative status, the government should amend legislation in redefining the protection people from being persecuted based on race, religion, and sexual orientation. The government should implement institutions that would enable young kids of all ages and background to interact and obtain education.
