CANNERY ROW
Doc lived in Cannnery Row for a variety of reasons. One reason was that Doc had a ” cool warm mind” and therefore he was quite caring. He showed this by taking care of anyone or anything. An example of this included when he checked on Darling when she was sick. Another example of this care is a quote in the book that follows as ” Doc would listen to any kind of nonsense and change it for you to a kind of wisdom.” Another reason why he lived in Cannery Row existed as he was loved by everyone. An example of this included when Mack and the boys threw a party for him and everyone came. A separate time includes when a line in the book said ” everyone who thought of him next, ” I really must do something nice for Doc.” Not only did humans like him but animals did to. A quote from the book states ” Doc tips his hat to dogs as he drives by and the dogs look up and smile at him.” One more reason why he lived there remained that he liked it very much. He liked the people there even though he did not show it at times. An example includes when he gave mack and the boys some gas for their trip. Doc also liked his job. He enjoyed collecting specimen and dealing with the animals. That is why he stayed in his laboratory all the time. Doc liked the unique qualities of Cannery Row. The opening line of the book best explains Cannery Row. It follows as ” Cannery Row in Monterey in California is a poem, a stink, a grating noise, a quality of light, a tone, a habit, a nostalgia, a dream.” And since Doc ” lived in a world of wonders, of excitement” he fits in Cannery Row like one of them round pegs. In conclusion, Cannery Row needed someone like Doc to respect, follow, and look up to and I think Doc knew this all along.
