Control, Support, and … Hate?

Why should an innocent dead man be left to lay, unburied, left for his soul to roam? And to be told so by a family member, perhaps not the closest family, yet, it is family. Family is supposed to be the ultimate support, everlasting, and always ready to forgive. Although, this is only the ideal family. What would cause such hate between two people of the same name? Mainly, there would be the reason that Creon possessed much power, and became a bit headstrong and took advantage of this advantage. With that statement, he is almost fulfilling Teiresias’ comment that “The only crime is pride.” He controlled his territory, and was used to applying his authority to situations, and showed disapproval to many things, even Teiresias’ talent of divination. He did not allow the fact that he didn’t have control to cross his mind in this major situation (the situation being the prediction of his own curse, affecting him if he were to sentence Antigone to a stone vault). One of the things that may have inflicted this bad decision, may have been that his thoughts were too developed on the law and on himself, therefore he lost track of what was divinely just and unjust. He was too proud to realize this, because he took for granted what he had, and just tried to glorify the aspects of this rule more. He also tried to gain more support from his surroundings (such as trying to please his territory, although he just upset the chorus and Choragos with all of his unjust actions and decisions). Through all of this, a terribly closed-minded, hateful, and overconfident king came about to Thebes. Yet, his own destiny came about him, to prove that what he claims to be just isn’t always, and that the worst happenings and mistakes were his overconfidence and his pride.
