Fear Essay, Research Paper
In life, people frequently judge others’ actions too harshly. It’s very common to hear
comments as to how another person should have handled a situation differently. Assuming the role
of another individual is not possible in actual life. The reader of literature, however, after analyzing
characters and motives, has the opportunity of mentally placing characters in new situations.
When adults become parents, they should assume responsibility for their children. In the
poem ”Fear”, the parent depicted is a very wholesome loving protective mother. In ”The Third
Bank of he River”, both parents are developed, but it is the father who avoids responsibility. Taking
the mother from Gabriela Mistral’s poem and placing her a the father in Joao Guimares Rosa’s short
story would create an environment where children could know love and its results.
The mother would have shared the boat with the family. She would have used it to teach
them respect of the water. In addition, voyages in the boat would have been quality time shared by
all members of the family. This mother would never leave her family. In fact, when this new parent
was the mother in Mistral; ’s poem, she was concerned that the her daughter would grow up and
leave her. She wanted always to be near her child in order to help her grow into a mature and loving
person. She wanted to be the one to protect, train, and love her. Her greatest fear was that the
influences of society might cause the daughter to rise above her. she voices this fear by saying , ” I
do not want them to make my child into a princess” (Fear, 15-16). In the third stanza, this fear
becomes stronger: ” I do not want them to make my child in to a queen” ( Fear, 23-24).
Unlike the father that Rosa created, who left his family without any remorse, the mother
would talk with and be part of her family. She would not think of sitting in a boat for thirty years,
remaining close enough that her family could see her, but spiritually remaining totally apart from them
and ignoring their pleas to return and accept her role as a parent. This mother would have been
there to help her daughter plan her wedding, and he would rejoice in the birth of her grandson.
