How Have People Modified Auckland S Volcanic Landscape? Essay, Research Paper
People in Auckland have modified the Volcanic Landscape quite dramatically. A Volcanic landscape is a space of land that has Volcanoes on it. There have been many changes first the Moir changed the land, then when Europeans came the also changed the land through quarrying the land, clearing of bush and subdivision.
When Moir found Auckland s volcanic landscape they saw it as a great place to build a pa sites. When Moir did this they gave the mountains traces to build fences to fend of invading tribes, these traces gave the mountains a rounded look. The Moir also dug very distinctive Kumiai pits into the mountainside. The pa sites were like barracks on top of a mountain, which was very effective because it is very hard to attach running up hill. Here is an example below.
When Europeans arrived they started to quarry the mountains for the valuable rock to help build roads, walls and even buildings like the Auckland town hall. This quarrying got a bit out of hand to the extent that Three Kings was totally wiped out and the same thing happened to other mountains in the Auckland area. One Mountain that has go very visible scars of quarrying is Pigeon Mountain. It has been quarried so much that only half of it is left (as shown below). The land that was quarried out has now turned into subdivision. Also Mt Wellington has had extensive quarrying it was stopped in 1965 and in its place was planted trees to stop erosion. Amazingly there are only a few mountains that have been untouched, for example Rangitoto
Most of the Volcanoes around Auckland originally were covered in thick scrub, but when the Europeans came the cleared the Island and used it for farmland, this was devastating on the wildlife. This is also evident on other volcanoes, for example Pigeon Mountain and Mt Wellington.
In Conclusion people have modified the Auckland Volcanic landscape by pa sites for example Kumiai pits, the clearing of scrub and Quarrying for example the complete wipe out of Three Kings.
