Time Changes Everything
Throughout time, with technology, higher learning, and new inventions things have a tendency to change. Our roads, ways of life, and communities have changed over time. A small town that may have been productive may not be now because of the changes. From our studies we have learned about how farms, buildings, and transportation have changed into forgotten history.
Some of the things that are forgotten are farms that are big, probably used to be bigger. Old roads and bridges become new, general stores in small towns or communities become rundown and some abandon. These stores become rundown and abandon because there is now Wal-Mart and K-Mart that replace these general stores of the past. That is why I feel it was bound for Route 66 to be replaced. I believe if Route 66 is the mother of all roads in America it is because the talk of it being the mother of American roads. If it wasn t for people traveling Route 66, and coming back home, and telling their friends about it the road would have never really known as that type of major road. I have to ask the question; would we know about Route 66 if people didn t tell us about it. Of course there are other things, like the sites that you can see by traveling across the country. At the height of Route 66 s travel it was the main highway to the west. Some of the things that attracted people to Route 66 the idea of the road is it will always mean going somewhere. (Pg. 27, Route 66) Another idea is if you have a fast car, a coast to reach, and a woman at the end of the road. (Pg.26, Route 66) You can say that Route 66 is the mother road because it was the first road to use one-mile intervals to let you know how far you had to go. There are many other things that make Route 66 the

mother of American roads. I feel that what I have found are the strongest reasons that make Route 66 what it was and is know to be thought of today. It set the standards for all roads or highways across American.
There are more roads in America besides Route 66. Normal roads like the country roads and city streets are these other roads that can take you to lots of new places. If Toequeville was to travel down the roads we go down this semester. He would say that there is now a difference in the social class unlike when he first came to America. If you are poor, you look poor, and if you are rich, you look rich. However, in America anyone can raise up above what ever their present situation is or that they were born into. You choose whether you want to be rich or poor. You make your life what you want it to be in America.
I think he would have understood what we talked about in Lexington. We talked about how what is new to us now will be old and forgotten, just like we forgot about what was new to our parents. It is now old, and that means there will always be change. One day someone will replace the Wal-Mart s and K-Mart s. This will happen because of technology. With new technology, we might seem to live simple, but it will be a high-tech simple life. Everything will be in are reach by computers.
Kunstler would say that Route 66 proves that America will change for the better, but that America will hold on to the old. Even though the old is replaced by the new. We still hold on to the old, like we hold on to cars made 50 years ago or older. I m not sure how he would write this paper. I feel that it would be wrote in same way, the same things that I have written about he would agree with. Kunstler said that cars open space far beyond

the city limits (pg. 89) I feel that this is what Route 66 did for our country, and that he would feel the same way.
We care about Route 66 because this road is America. You see different people, places, and cultures this is America. No matter what road you may take it is America and you will find different people, places, cultures, and a different story each time you go somewhere that is different. We need to see Route 66 because it is apart of our history that shouldn t be forgotten. The places we have gone to visit this semester so far have been places that have been forgotten, or have things that have been forgotten. Like when we visited Amity Hill Rd. it is more than likely not remembered for being a main travel road to get to Salisbury or that the old school that now houses people used to be a all black school during segregation. We need to remember what used to be, so we can know how we got to where we are now, and know how we got what we have now.
