Transformation of Native American Cultures
As the white man killed the buffalo, they also killed off the Indians. Indians needed buffalo to eat, defend, and stay warm. Horses helped both Indians and white man hunt, which killed off buffalo even faster. Guns that the white man brought over enabled the Indians to fight back.
Homestead Act granted free land to citizens who live on and cultivate the land for 5 years. Dawes Act got rid of tribal lands and granted the land allotments to individual families.
The Indian Bureau supported citizenship and landholding by individual Indians.
Subsistence was the ablilty to maintaine their life at the most basic level.
In Little Big Horn Dakota’s defeated Colonel George A. Custer. Wounded Knee was the final suppression of Plains tribes by U.S. Army.
Exploitation of Natural Resources
Prospectors were the people that went out looking for gold. Then they told syndicates, the people with the money, where the gold was so that the gold could be dug up.
The Timber and Stone Act allowed private citizens to buy 160-acre plots of land that had alot of timber and was unfit for cultivation.
The Frontier Society was mainly for men who wanted to get rich quick. But women also came and provided cooking and laundering for the miners.

Railroad Expansion
Railroads created more industries, such as coal production, passenger- and freight-car manufacture, and depot construction.
Railroads were usually created to connect cities, but in the west, cities were created around the railroads.
