In Flanders Field: A Puissant Poem Essay, Research Paper

In Flanders Field

John McCrae’s “In Flanders Field” is a puissant poem because it describes the despondency of war. War is a state or time of fighting between different groups. It is a long period of struggle and fighting. War breaks out when differences cannot be settled peacefully. Many people are usually hurt in times of war; Whether it is a war against countries or a war against a group of former friends.

John McCrae’s “In Flanders Field” illustrates the destruction, demise, and violence war causes. War produces destruction. In the poem, victims tell the living, “We are the dead.” This shows how war has destructed the lives of people. War not only destructs the lives of those who have died, but it will also pierce and annihilate the lives of there loved ones. War causes the demise of people’s family and friends. War victims inform the reader of this by saying that they “Loved, and were loved, and now [they] lie in Flanders fields.” It must eminently difficult to continue living one’s life, the same way after one has lost someone they love. War brings about an abundant amount of violence. Singing lark birds are “Scarce heard among the guns /below,” during times of war. The deceased war victims buried below the ground hear the tumultuous guns being fired, which is masking the songs of the larks.

John McCrae’s “In Flanders Field” illustrates how war and hostile feelings toward enemies are prolonged. A hatred one person feel toward another is often passed on to others. Soldiers are telling the people they are leaving behind to, “Take up [their] quarrel with the foe.” The passed on hatred causes the people involved to want to continue fighting. People often feel guilty if they do not continue fighting. In the poem, a trooper informs us that “If [we] break faith with [them] who die /[They] shall not sleep, though poppies grow/ In Flanders fields.” He tells us that the dead will not be able to rest in peace if what they died for is not won. The soldiers want their descendants to be proud of what they have done. They tell us that “The torch, [is ours]” and “to hold it high.” They want their progeny to be proud and carry on living for what they fought for.
