The Daily Rumour Essay, Research Paper
????????? Graham is a reporter for the leading national newspaper of America
the Daily Rumour. Graham is in his mid-thirties. Graham is very corrupt and
obsessed with his personal goal, to get to the top, to become rich and famous.
Graham has known Tim for a few years now. Tim is a highly qualified apprentice
of Graham?s and he is on the fast track to becoming a top reporter. Tim is in
his mid-twenties. Tim is frustrated at getting all the crummy stories and wants
personal satisfaction and a higher wage package. People fear him from taking
their jobs and try to reduce him to a lowly apprentice. Jerry is the paper?s
editor and has got there for corrupt reasons including back-stabbing his own
friends to get the best and most highly commended stories.
????????? Scene
one ????????? Graham and Tim are going up a lift to the
twenty-sixth floor of the office block to their department. GRAHAM:
Great day, Tim. I feel like I?m going to like today, I?ve got a good vibe. TIM:
Yeah, it?s alright for some, while your looking to get Michael Jordan?s
coach interview on the front page I?m looking to get on page twenty-six with my
criminal story. Closest I?ve got to the front page is page twelve. GRAHAM:
Don?t worry Tim, we?ve all got our moments and I?m sure yours will come soon. TIM:
Yeah, we?ll see. ??????????? The lift stops on Graham and
Tim?s? floor. JERRY: [Looking
rushed] Tim have you got that Jordan story? TIM: [Under
his breath] I wish. GRAHAM:
No, I?ve got it, why? JERRY:
Well, I?m sorry, but Ron, who does the sports review for Channel Six, is away
and you?ll have to do it. GRAHAM:
I?d love to, but what about my story? JERRY:
Well, he?s cancelled. The Washington Post offered him more money. GRAHAM:
Yeah, right.??????????? Scene Two ??????????? ??????????? Graham went home satisfied. He did a
good job that day. He?d found a new way to be recognised through TV. He could
earn loads if he got recognition for it. All he had to do was a little job on
Ron the ?ex-regular? sports reviewer. Graham chuckled at the thought and tried
to remember where that drug dealer lived. Graham walked to the dealer?s house
and gave him five hundred dollars to plant the drugs on Ron. ??????????? The next day at work, Graham is
sitting at his desk. GRAHAM: [Picking
up the ?phone] Yeah, you done it? Good work Bill.[Graham hangs up and
then picks up the ?phone] Hi, Jerry. I?ve got to tell you something about
Ron. JERRY:
Yeah, what?s that? GRAHAM:
Well, I think he?s on drugs, I saw him taking some last night. JERRY:
OK, thanks for informing me. ??????????? Thirty minutes later Graham sees Ron
being escorted out of Jerry?s office. GRAHAM: [to
himself] All in good day?s work. ??????????? ??????????? Jerry comes out of his office and
walks up to Graham.JERRY:
Thanks for the info, you can never tell what sort of people take drugs. In fact
we should have a drugs test. I?ll organise it tomorrow. GRAHAM:
Yeah, good idea. JERRY:
Listen Graham, you did a good job yesterday on that sports review, how about a
full time position. GRAHAM:
Full time, really? JERRY:
Yeah, sure. If you want it we can organise your contract in my office. GRAHAM:
I?d love the job. ??????????? ??????????? At the end of the day Graham came
out as a sports reviewer on a higher salary, but most importantly a job with
higher recognition. Tim
appears in reception and joins Graham.TIM: I
heard about your new job, sounds great. I suppose I?ll be helping you. GRAHAM: [Picking
up his complementary paper] Yeah, I talked to Jerry and he agreed that you
would assist me with it.[Graham suddenly changes mood upon reading the front
page] I cannot believe that backstabbing son of a cow! He has got such a
nerve! TIM: [Tim
looks at Graham?s paper, shocked] I can?t believe that Jerry would steal
your story. I never knew he would do such a thing. GRAHAM: [Fuming]
Well read it, he has. Well, we?ll see who gets the last laugh. I?ll get him
back, if it?s the last thing I do. ??????????? ??????????? Scene Three??????????? It is four weeks after the story has
been written and Jerry has been nominated for the National Journalists
Association Best Front Page Report Award. The award ceremony is to be held in a
week. Memories are still fresh in Graham?s mind.TIM: Have
you heard Graham, Jerry?s got a nomination for that award for the best front
page report. I bet your annoyed with that. GRAHAM:
Annoyed, too right I?m annoyed. TIM: So,
thought of how to get him back? GRAHAM:
Yeah, I know just the thing. A bit of lead in the leg should do the trick.
Promise you won?t tell anyone though. TIM:
Yeah, sure. I wouldn?t dob on a mate.??????????? Tim looks upon this as an
opportunity to speed up his rise to the top. Get Graham out by telling the
police and working as Graham?s assistant on the sports review he would get
Graham?s TV spot. That day Tim ?phones the police and informs them of his
suspicions about Graham.??????????? Scene Four????????? It is the day of the award ceremony and
after work. Graham is squashed up in his position above the stage and has a
clear view of Jerry?s table. His gun is in his case beside him.GRAHAM: [Speaking
to his silenced PP7 with zoom sight] Come on you beauty, out you come. Now
there?s a good girl. Your going to do me a good job today, I can just feel it.??????????? Jerry appears and after some
chit-chat sits at his table.GRAHAM: [To
himself] Now, was I going to hit him in the head or the leg, I can?t
remember. OK, heads says in the leg, tails says in the head. [Graham tosses
the coin] Heads, shoot! Oh well, here goes.[Graham takes aim].??????????? At this moment two bulky police
officers jump out and grab Graham.OFFICER
1: Graham Ball we are arresting you for conspiracy to murder. You do not have
to say anything blah, blah, blah. OFFICER
2: [Leading Graham to the van] Now, get in the van. By the way nice gun,
I think I?ll have that. OFFICER
1: Can?t I have it? OFFICER
2: No, you had the last one, this one?s mine.??????????? Eventually Graham got put in prison
for thirty years. One charge for conspiracy to murder and one charge for
planting drugs. Tim is expecting Graham?s job and is enquiring in the office
the next day.TIM: Hey,
Jerry. Now that Graham?s gone wouldn?t I get his job, I am the obvious choice. JERRY:
Now don?t you think you?re being overly confident? TIM: Why
not? I am getting the job aren?t I? JERRY: [Smirking]
What for when we have our original sports reviewer back? Isn?t that right Ron? RON: [Appearing
from Jerry?s office] Yeah, I?m back in business and you will be my
assistant. Unless you?d prefer making the coffee of course. TIM: [Resentfully]
How could I overlook working with such a talented person. RON: Just
what I?d thought you?d say.[Smirking] Oh and while your at it bring some
coffee up, there?s a good lad.
