Herman Melville was born on the first of August in 1819. Born in New York City to a family where there wealth was seriously declining. Allan Melville, his father, was a Unitarian who made a living as a merchant-importer. Maria Gansevoort Melville, his mother, was of New York Dutch ancestry and a member of the Calvinistic Dutch-Reformed Church. From 1825 to 1831, Melville’s school life was incredibly hard. Due to his father’s failure in various business endeavors, Melville went a new school almost every two or three years. Some of the schools are New-York Male High School 1825 to 1829, the Columbia Grammar School 1829 to 1830, and the Albany Academy 1830 to 1831). Herman Melville never stayed in one place for a long time. Heramn Malvilles dad had died on January 28, 1832. Herman mom fell into debt because she had to care for eight children. that s why Melville’s storys have people with good hearts ans wander around.
Melville’s childhood life was really hard. He grew up in severe poverty. Herman had a lot of family problems, Melville sought adventure in life. Melville wandered during his child hood years of his life. He held jobs as a clerk at the New York State Bank in Albany, a farmhand for his Uncle Thomas, and a bookkeeper. As a last reasort Herman signed up for a voyage to Liverpool as a ships-boy on Christmas Day, 1839.
Melville’s life changed again on August 4, 1847, when he married Elizabeth Shaw. They decided thata life of literature would be best. Melville and Elizabeth decided to settle down in New York City, a major publication city. Melville bought a house at 103 Fourth Avenue, where he, his wife, his mother, his four unmarried sisters, his younger brother Allen and his bride, and his youngest brother Thomas all settled in together.
Herman Melville was a good man that wrote a lot of books. His masterpiece was Moby Dick.
